1. tech amazon and every new site and app in the past 10 years has changed the game. like how everyone and their mom does dropshipping and wholesale shit now from china and that's just the beginning. dropshipping is now ultra saturated itself and manufacturers are going direct to consumer. there's no way for brooks brothers to maintain their price points when u can buy ultra cheap dress shirts for 70-90% off online. not to mention brooks clothes never fit most people. the other side of the market is all unique custom shit from etsy made by stay-at-home moms, so there simply isn't a need for brooks anymore
2. the collapse of finance prestige and more importantly, finance culture was a double whammy. NO ONE wears ties or suits anymore and few need the Brooks Brothers type of dress shirts. even in hedge funds, as data scientists and quants join the ranks, everyone is going t-shirt or lululemon athleisure wear.
3. mismanagement and failure to adapt. even under armour got fucked and they did a pretty good job trying to follow the trends towards athleisure. brooks brothers did absolutely nothing but continue to sell 20 year old bland color shirts for $60 bucks. u can get the same shit on amazon for $10. |

If you go at the right time, Banana Republic shirts can be had for like $18 and pants for $25. That's probably 1/3 what they sold for 15 years ago.
Not sure about finance, but I was a corporate lawyer in big law and no associates wore suits and some junior partners even started pushing back. Not sure how BB can make it with those changes? |
