Some people enjoy RSF threads, and other people get enraged by them. Those who don't like RSF, by blocking him, will not longer be enraged, and thus have no motive to out him by obsessively seeking out personal details and finding his personal blog, dad's firm website, etc. At the same time time, RSF could block those who do things like spam only (fat loser) after every post he makes, which will make him less enraged, and thus less likely to do things such as out other posters in revenge, which I believe he has resorted to in the past. The whole environment becomes less toxic and less outtings occur. Rachmiel's life and the lives of everyone is made a lot better. |

It's a sociopolitical thing across countries too -- you'll see this sort of advocacy more on the Continent than in the UK (though that's changing) and more within the whole EU than within the US.
By contrast, the traditional "right" view on this topic is that freedom of speech trumps freedom from offense (and, as a second order proposition, that a "marketplace of ideas" can sort the meritorious from the non-meritorious ideas).
This is all obviously a generalization; there are plenty of people on the left (especially though non-exclusively in America) who are still champions of free speech; and there are plenty of people on the right (especially though non-exclusively in Europe) who endorse the "freedom from offense" position.

But to move into the criticism part of my compliment sandwich: I think one of the reasons why you've been such a great steward is that you've been an absentee father. When you're here, I've noticed that you have a pronounced tendency to fiddle with things. Make "improvements". Innovate around the edges. Etc. I totally understand the impulse, and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with change, per se... except that I think when it comes to XO, the less customization, the better. Putting the limited (necessary) mod powers aside, we're all in this together: we don't have emoji capabilities, we don't have blocking capabilities, we don't have annoying signature blocks, we don't have on-bort private messaging functions, etc. We can post text, and we can bump. That's it. I think the incredible creativity and the thriving community culture that you see here--pumos notwithstanding--has been in large part a reaction to those harsh limitations. You put a lot of smart, funny, bored, lonely people together in a box with a few pencils and a bunch of blank walls, and they'll work together and draw you an amazing mural (and when the pencils run out of graphite, they'll giggle and pool their shit in one corner and use it to fingerpaint the rest and then a shitfight will break out and how can you truly hate someone who is literally wearing your shit on their face?).
But put the same people into a room filled with all sorts of cool gadgets and tools and things to do, and slowly they they'll break off into their own little subgroups to do their own things, fracturing the larger community in the process. And then a year later, when disagreements do start breaking out, and some people start thinking about leaving, maybe the culture no longer strikes a lot them as special enough to warrant putting up with their annoying ass neighbors anymore. After all, it's *just* a message board, right? And sure there's a lot of smart folks here, but a lot of message boards have even cooler toys that might be worth exploring...
So I guess what I'm saying is, in my humble opinion the best thing you can do for this board is (1) put good, trustworthy mods in place, (2) make sure there's a system to prevent mod abuse, (3) be available to make judgment calls if the mods reach out to you, (4) continue paying hosting fees (ty), (5) restore classic threads that were unjustifiably deleted, and (6) keep your fucking hands off of everything else and just let it do. That might be a slight oversimplification, and I might be forgetting one or two improvements that would be genuine assets to the board, but I think that's fundamentally the best approach to take. The more you allow for users to customize their individual XO experiences, the greater the risk to the longterm cohesion and sustainability of a strong board culture that really makes this place special.

It's no coincidence that a lot of posters who were driven off have suddenly come back at this moment, now that there is the expectation that rachmiel will make changes to the process of the board to remove the problems that drove them away.
Even you were previously semi-retired, and have only started being more active again recently, I believe. And even you, for all that you've done for the board (and you've done a lot), have a lot less on the line sometimes than many other posters like me, who have personally felt the pain of being outted.
And the current system is just not sustainable. It requires rachmiel's constant personal intervention. There's always the illusion that every time after rachmiel fixes things, the bogeyman of the minute will be banished forever (before it was Sonic Youth, now it's Benzo), and things will be fine from now on with the newly installed mods. But every time that doesn't in fact work out, and rachmiel has to stress-fully step in and micromanage a solution.
We don't want that. After all, rachmiel pays for this site without expecting anything in return. I think it's too much to also ask him to micromanage the site by having to constantly fix banning/outting/moderation problems personally. And that's what will happen if the current system continues.
The goal should be a sustainable system where that isn't necessary. Being able to block and ignore posters is a crucial part of that. |

But with that said, I think granting everyone the ability to just block posts or posters they don't like is an approach that simply goes too far. I'm not sure if there is a perfect solution to be had, but I am convinced that if we go down that path, this board will be a fundamentally different place in 3 years (if it still exists at all). The problem is that hypothesis isn't quickly falsifiable, of course. It would be ideal if the experiment could be run for 2 weeks, and then we could see what would happen and reverse it if necessary. The problem is, as you put it, that the ill effects, if they truly existed, wouldn't be seen until much later.
I want to see the board continue to exist, too. That's why I hope to find ways to avoid rachmiel having to personally step in if he doesn't want to. So far, the only solution that has occured to big issues is rachmiel personally stepping in. Even his chosen personal delegate previously, GTO, couldn't handle things without rachmiel. That's a big problem, since I think it's not fair to have rachmiel have to play nanny since he makes no money on this site and in fact has to pay server costs. |

(1) xo is about forthright discussion of any topic
(2) anonymity is essential to forthright discussion and
(3) moderation should be content-neutral and sweep no more broadly than necessary to protect the anonymity that is essential to xo
as long as people can n-thread there's going to be certain buzzfeed pockets of the internet that HATE us, but as soon as people can't n-thread xo will cease to be xo. i think a real consistency of principle would give you enough cover to attract new users and make money off the site.
but if you don't care about any of that and just think it's fun to be the innkeeper at the caravansary for psychopaths, i'd humbly ask that you make sure none of your remodeling threatens our anonymity because frankly some of your guests scare the absolute fuck out me. |
