he prattled on in this manner for several more minutes. the clock now read 0412. he lit a cigarette and took in a drag and let it out with uncharacteristic laze. -ain't no helping it now. if they found me here they'd find me anywhere i reckon.-

he went outside in the crisp night. the mountain air was heavy with pine. in the distance three bright flares arced menacingly along the horizon in his direction. he wriggled his way into a metal pod. green and red lights spread across a control panel flickered like constellations. he strapped himself in.

he pressed a series of buttons and then flicked a final switch. johnny cash was playing scratchily through the cheap speakers. the metal pod began to rumble. nearby debris was brushed aside by the force of the rocket. the small clearing around the hunting shack lit up deep in the sierra nevada. the pod elevated slowly at first and then soared like a mother fucker.

as the pod traced its path up and away into the vast desolateness of the moonless sky the three menacing arcs approached. they drew closer to the shack and their sonic hiss grew louder. for the moderator bound to a rusty chair from somewhere in louisiana time slowed down before they hit. in those last fractions of a second the moderator saw the three missiles in all their detail. who knows if they had time to feel anything in response to the `vivismart systems` logo on the missiles' casing. cruel irony.

that's how it ended for another life lost to this insane empire. some innocent mod sucked into things way bigger than they'd bargained for, sent to track down saul after his brazen escape from a bangkok basement. what was another mod evaporated to nothingness to rachmiel? this was an empire after all.

and i'll be the first to tell you that it's a bitch being on the run where the sun never sets.
