Top laterals for each firm. Yeah maybe not always "laterals" but at least "employment prior to or after joining." I have no idea why some have a lot and some have few, or why some don't have any after.

Before (number) -> FIRM -> After (number)

1. SullCrom (9), Cravath (7), USCOA (4), Skadden (4), Proskauer (4) -> WACHTELL -> DPW (4), Paul weiss (4), V&E (4)

2. USCOA (16), MS (6), Lehman (5), USDCT (5), SullCrom (5) -> CRAVATH -> Latham (15)

3. USDOJ (16) -> SKADDEN

4. Skadden (17), USDOJ (13), Cravath (11) -> SULLCROM -> GS (17), Latham (16), MS (15)

5. USCOA (14), Citi (11), Latham (10), Skadden (9), Cravath (9) -> DPW -> GS (16), MS (15), Citi (12)

6. Dewey & LeBoeuf (22), Clifford Chance (17), Linklaters (17), Shearman (16), PwC (13) -> WEIL -> Latham (21)

7. Shearman (17), SullCrom (12), Federal Judiciary (9), Weil (9) -> STB

8. Freshfields (20), European Commission (14), Clifford Chance (14), E&Y (12), Linklaters (12) -> CLEARY -> Latham (23), Freshfields (16), European Commission (15)

9. Skadden (20) -> KIRKLAND -> Sidley (20), Paul Hastings (19)

10. Allen & Overy (28), Freshfields (26), Linklaters (25), Skadden (23), Cleary (23) -> LATHAM

11. Heller (31), USDOJ (21), USCOA (14), Howrey (13), Dewey & LeBoeuf (11) -> COVINGTON

12. Latham (17), USCOA (15), USDOJ (12), Jones Day (12), Skadden (12) -> GDC

13. Cleary (8), Cravath (8), Baker & McKenzie (7), USCOA (7), White & Case (6) -> DEBEVOISE

14. OMM (12), Weil (10), Skadden (9), Dewey & LeBoeuf (9) -> PAUL WEISS -> Citi (12), Columbia Law School (11)

15. Kirkland (20), PwC (15) -> SIDLEY

16. USCOA (8), USN (4), USDOJ (4), McKinsey (3), USAO (3) -> WILLIAMS & CONNOLLY -> GULC (5)

17. Clifford Chance (39), Linklaters (33), Freshfields (30), Allen & Overy (21), Hogan Lovells (21) -> WHITE & CASE

18. Latham (14), Jones Day (13), USCOA (11), Allen & Overy (10), Clifford Chance (8) -> QUINN EMANUEL -> Latham (6), Google (5), Perkins Coie (4), Manatt (4)

19. Heller (20) -> JONES DAY

20. Federal judiciary (5), Cravath (5), USDOJ (4), Paul Weiss (3), Cahill Gordon (3) -> BOIES -> Debevoise (4), Latham (3), Herrick Feinstein (3), Friedman Kaplan (3)

I agree this is terribly confusing. I think each line item represents both INCOMING and OUTGOING laterals for a firm. So the first line is about WACHTELL. The firms to the left of Wachtell are sources of laterals hired by Wachtell (with the number of laterals Wachtell has from each firm listed in parentheses). The firms to the right of Wachtell are the places where former Wachtell associates have ended up (with the number of Wachtell alum at each firm listed in parenetheses). E.g., Wachtell has 9 lawyers who formerly worked at Sullivan, and there are 4 lawyers at DPW who were previously with Wachtell.

Ok, this fits. Information is terrible presented. Should be something like:

1 - Wachtell: [IN] / [OUT]

Also, not sure I understand why WLRK has 4 out to DPW, but DPW has 0 in from WLRK.

I think he lists just the top 5 in/out firms. DPW is a top landing spot for people from WLRK, but because of the relative sizes, WLRK is not a top source for DPW.

Does the legal industry actually take into consideration the specific firm (even if similar tier) when lateraling?

Okay, for you illiterates. LinkedIn has "company profiles" for each law firm. It lists the most popular companies that people listed as previous positions prior to that company; and it also lists the most popular companies that people listed as subsequent positions after having been at that company. For instance, 9 individuals working at Wachtell listed "Sullivan & Cromwell" as a previous employer; and 4 individuals at DPW listed "Watchtell" as a previous employer.

So, go look at http://www.linkedin.com/company/wachtell-lipton-rosen-&-katz/insights

"Before Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz employees worked at..."

SullCrom (9), Cravath (7), USCOA (4), Skadden (4), Proskauer (4)

"After Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz employees went to..."

DPW (4), Paul weiss (4), V&E (4)

---

LinkedIn just doesn't list the exit options for some firms--maybe because they're too scattered or too few.
