Do service partners in biglaw have any lateral options (outside of moving with a rainmaker)? I assume no other biglaw firm wants or needs another biller just doing the work, and midlaw/boutiques will be presumably a 50% paycut? I'm at $515k base and $100-$200k bonus depending on my collections.

My goal is to make more money (whether in current position, lateraling, or via equity partner which is another 5+ year track here) and try to get away from the bad rainmaker partner dumping all these bad cases on me to run.

Issues with lateraling -- no clients, zero trial experience, and I start from scratch with no goodwill even assuming I could get an offer. I see laterals come here any they struggle to get up to speed, cannot internally network effectively or just not enough extra work to go around, and they don't really last. I don't want to jump ship to another place and end up with the same problems.

I run cases from top to bottom with usually minimal or zero associate backup (always leaving, getting asked to leave) and do all the heavy lifting from written discovery to depositions to all motion writing and court appearances etc... I don't mind the work but the pace seems unsustainable as I get older.

You do all the written discovery? You’ve never had a trial after I assume more than a decade? Sounds made up.

Build relationships with the clients you are servicing. Get a couple decent size matters for them and wall off help from anyone else. Leave and profit. They’ll move the matters with you. You then have 3 years to make it do what it do at the new shop before you might have to leave again.

just pretend you have clients. most of these equity partners in litigation can't predict one way or another whether they're going to have clients 2 years from now, let alone 5 or 10. most clients involved in high-stakes litigation who are willing to pay for biglaw have cases that are so bespoke and infrequent that it's impossible to build a consistent "book." and the vast majority of clients don't stick with the same litigation firm anyway. the only partners who can count on a perpetual book are actual famous people who everyone knows

At my first biglaw firm the litigation group was basically a service group for the transactional departments where the actual rainmaker partners were.Things eventually got slow and a bunch of these lit service partners lef and managed to lateral to other v50 firms.

The process was amusing because these guys always maneged to lateral to other prestigious firms as partners, but whenever I talked to associates that I knew who worked at those firms they just bithced that these people lied about having any actual portable business and that they basically do nothing. Nonetheless, these guys would inevitably stay at these firms for years, well beyond however long a low hours associate gets normally in biglaw.
