I missed PAYE by a few months. I have $230K in student loans. I think I'm going to take a post-bac class and take out a few grand in undergrad loans (low interest rate relative to graduate loans - 3.4%) and this way become eligible for PAYE.

Any reason this won't work? Shrewd?

No. There are 2 parts to being eligible. The first is having loans made after a certain date. You can do this by simply consolidating--no need to take classes. The 2nd part is the hard part, it's that you did not have outstanding loans as of a certain date in 2007. A possible workaround is if you did a consolidation before that date in 2007.

Really? Just consolidating after October 2011 counts as taking out a loan?

Are you sure?

PAYE is only good if you never plan on making much while having massive student loans, correct?

Correct on massive loans, but the first part depends what you mean by much. 100k-150k salary can still easily benefit.

I have 230k and NY biglaw. It stil makes sense given the capitalization limit.
