5 Washington motorcyclists killed in separate crashes within 24 hours
Five motorcyclists were killed within a 24 hour period Saturday in separate crashes across Western Washington.
One of the crashes happened early Saturday morning in the 2400 block of Maple Valley Highway.
The orange spray paint markings left behind on the road from the investigation are a constant reminder of the crash. Employees at a nearby bar wish they could erase the crash from their memory.
"It was a lot. It was really a lot," said a woman who identified herself as Slim, the bar's manager. "And it was very graphic and emotional."
Slim, as she’s known to regular customers, was working early Saturday morning when she saw the aftermath of the crash.
A man heading east was knocked off his motorcycle after being hit by a car that had been driving behind him, surveillance video shows.
The motorcyclist never had a chance, Slim said.
"Came back and jumped, hit him twice, went up in the air and over the top of him," she told KOMO News on Sunday.
"Anytime I see a motorcycle now, you know, that kinda pops into my head," said bar employee Chris Doleski, who helped direct traffic until first responders arrived on scene. "The sound of it. It's just - everything."
The crash was one of at least five involving motorcycles across the region Saturday that ended lives or sent riders to the hospital.
Two motorcyclists were killed Saturday morning when one crossed over the center line along Highway 101 near Brinnon and hit another motorcyclist going the opposite direction, Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers said.
Another motorcyclist was killed Saturday night when he hit an SUV that had failed to yield for a left turn on Highway 12 near Ethel, WSP troopers said.
Another motorcyclist was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after a crash Saturday night at 142nd Avenue Southwest and Tilley Road South near Maytown, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office. The motorcyclist's condition is unknown.
A 24-year-old motorcyclist stopped in a gore point on Interstate 5 in Tacoma was hit and killed by a van driving in the southbound lanes Saturday evening, WSP troopers said. A passenger in a third vehicle was hurt.
Officers believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash along Maple Valley Highway in Renton.
