Fuck these scum. I am glad they get to deal with what 40% of Americans get to deal with.

"What's available is not nice at all and the rents have gone up a lot," Mr Storc told the BBC. "I told my teenage daughter we had to accept we would live somewhere not very nice."

Yet there was a "tragic" misconception that all of the victims of the Palisades fire were wealthy, according to Pete Brown, a spokesperson for the area's city council member, Traci Parks.

Many Palisades fire victims purchased their homes decades ago, possibly for prices as low as $25,000, he told the BBC.

reduced prop taxes has a small impact on prices compared to the trillons in federal support for morgages, the tax deduction on mortgage interest, and zoning laws.

Much of LA is very modest housing stock. 2-bedroom, 1,000 sqft bungalows, 2-3 bedroom ramblers from the 50s. When we first moved here I was surprised by how many houses were only 2-bedrooms. A good chunk of what burned in Altadena were working to middle class housing of the era, which remained fairly inexpensive into the 90s, which is one reason why Altadena has a large black and Latino population, it was what they could afford. It's only in recent decade that they started selling for $1+M.

In the 70s you could buy a comfortable 2,000 sqft 3-bedroom ranch house with sea view in Dana Point or San Clemente down in OC for 75k, so it's plausible that the small bungalows and ramblers in modest quarters of LA could be had for a third of that, especially if they already needed some work. And even in Pacific Palisades back in the 70s there were small sub 1500 sqft houses. There was nowhere the volume of wealth or size of affluent populations in the 1970s compared to today.

Anything under 950k will be condos. SFHs will be above $1M unless a teardown.

Altadena also has gorgeous areas with beautiful homes that burned. Fire took an equal opportunity approach. Friends of ours had a gorgeous large 1920s Spanish colonial with loggias and lily ponds and Spanish tiling and due to sheer fate it survived even though his neighbors all burned. My heart goes out for the town. I always liked the place. Has a real vibe. Normal people. Liberal for sure but in a good way.

There is no way this is true in the Palisades. Literally everyone there is a true richmo. The houses are huge, 98% brand new (built in the last 10 years) and the people who own them are extremely successful hollywood business moguls or actors/actresses. Those are mostly insured even with all the bullshit going on in CA with fire insurance it's still possible to get insured, even if you have to go through the state to do it.

The Eaton fire is a totally different story. These are MC to UMC ppl trying to scrape by in LA and prob not super up to date on the status of their homeowners insurance. These are the types to go oh my homeowners insurance policy is getting non-renewed i should probably take a look at other policies and then they just kinda forget to do it for a few months not assuming their shit would burn down in the next month.

Everything you wrote about the Palisades is Opposite Day wrong. You may be thinking of the homes on the Malibu waterfront that burned but those also mostly aren’t “brand new (built in the last 10 years).” Palisades has true richmos like the dude that had the Succession house. But most of the houses that burned are what’s described up thread. A small lot with a medium-large house that is several decades old and occupied by someone who bought it (or inherited from relatives who bought it) for a small fraction of its current value. Lots of boomers and older Gen Xers who thought they won at life because their middle class home of the late 80s gained so much equity that they became paper multimillionaires.

It will be extremely expensive and under threat of regulatory restriction and impossible to insure now. The land values will also collapse after this unless some major change happens to reduce the fire risk.

To be fair,

TWIST: No they won't, and you're legitimately retarded if you actually think that.

SOURCE: Huge swathes of Malibu literally go up in flames every decade or so (the last big Malibu fire before this was in like 2018)... and yet in 2025, tons of richmos would still gladly beat a pregnant woman to death with their bare hands on national TV for the "privilege" of shelling out tens of millions of dollars to own a house in that area. In fact, Malibu property values have only continued to rise steadily throughout the last decade... odd case!

(In b4 "B-b-but Pacific Palisades is totally different than Malibu for reasons, it's not the same thing at all, trust me, I know these things!")

how does prop 13 work on forced rebuilds? they can rebuild a new, nicer home, and still get the same assessment?

I think there’s some cap on it so that you can’t build to more than “substantially equivalent” value but then you keep your insane windfall property tax assessment. But you can’t get insurance so you’re still kinda fucked.

reminds me of ITE when a bunch of boomers got ejected from their bubbles and realized "just give him a firm handshake" didn't get you a cradle to grave job anymore.

they created a protectionist NIMBY regime and it's pure justice when they are hoisted be their own petards.

I would put at least 20 other big city school districts behind LAUSD. It is terrible, but really only for poors. Their satellite cities also have their own school districts, and that’s where everyone with kids who gives a shit ends up living if they aren’t decamillionaires. But like SF schools are god awful everywhere, even in the richest neighborhoods because those commies are so far gone that they literally ruin the schools that might have a chance to be OK and claim “equity” requires it. That’s before you even look at truly broken cities with tax base like St. Louis.

i believe his point is that these entrenched wealthmos give such little shit about everyone else that they let the public schools in the area go to shit because they just send their kids to private and are always pulling the later up for everyone else. i notice a lot of cities are like what you describe where the wealthy areas have shit schools and the rich areas have good schools because that's where people move if they want their kids to go to public.

"worst in the country" was poor choice of words, probably "worst schools relative to the tax base." yeah, absolute dogshit dindu land is way, way worse.

no, that's not his philosophy at all. he choose to live as a survivalist but he wasn't a total anarchist who believed in no government. he was anti-authoritarian and believed in the destruction of big government and big business, which some would file under "anarchism", but he didn't believe in the complete abolition of a state or government.

he didn't get MAF about his property taxes. he got a low income waiver. idk recall anything about him getting MAF about a property tax bill.

you should really read him. you'd like him.

almost everything he wrote was about why the system that exists is sucked and is going to keep sucking, and how to topple it. but he didn't write too much about what he would replace it with. i'd say he's very jeffersonian state's rights types in that he'd want smaller governments. his big gripe was that the monolithic system we have now is evil and explaining how it works and why. he continued to revise technological slavery and his predictions and thoughts are so prescient that if you didn't know it you would have think someone from today wrote it as if it was written years ago.

well two minutes ago you thought his beliefs were:

"I thought he thought that everyone ought to be able to live off land they owned for free and grow veggies and not have to pay the piper. Thought that was his whole thing. Government doesn't let you simply live off the grid you have to EARN." and that he was irate over $25 property tax bills.

so, perhaps you're not informed enough to say what he believed it.

To be fair,

CR... except that instead of being hoisted on their own petards, the federal government will instead quickly step in and fully cover all of these losses for ~110% of their "fair market value" and then just add that to our tab.

You really think the Feds would leave whiny Jews and petulant California Boomers hanging out to dry when they can instead kick the can down the road and further fuck over retarded and demoralized loser Millennials and Zoomers who predictably won't do a goddamn thing in response to getting assfucked yet again?

yeah they did for ITE too. some may suffer or at least sweat a little bit. which will be nice. but of course they'll boom their way out of this one. after we shut the entire world down for 3 years because boomers wanted to live a bit longer even if it meant stunting the growth of every other generation i gave up thinking the government would ever resist booming.

Prop 13 is still so insane to me. I don't think there is an equivalent boomer statute anywhere thats like "you get to stop paying property taxes if you bought your home several decades ago. everyone else who isn't in the special group will just have to pay more." senior exemptions are similarly bad but just not to this level.

property taxes are the one very good tax imo. ensures productivity of land.

prop 13 is retarded but so are property taxes, the idea the govt can tax u every year even if u've paid off the property is furking insane, it maeks zero sense. its the only tax not tied to annual economic activity like wages, sales tax etc

if u need property taxes to ensure the owner uses it for productive means that seems like a retarded way to do things, u shld instead tax ppl who have 2nd homes that are unoccupied etc

Regarding prop13 that just makes owning property real. Otherwise in most of usa taxes+insurance are 10x rates in Europe. That's why long term rental is so much cheaper in Nice than Miami for example.
