perhaps andy roddick. just became #1 and was hitting his stride, and then fed came along. he lost 4 slam finals to fed. he'd be an all time great it if weren't for that.

how can you say this and then also say Fed dominated in a weak era? You are really trying to have your cake and eat it too.

it was a weak era that one trick pony roddick would have otherwise prob dominated but for fed. roddick is unlucky bc he didn't get to be the best in that weak era.

If we are using quality of competition to deduce which player is the GOAT, I think the best metric to use is "number of grand slam finals losses to Andy Murray".

Let's compare Fed, Djoker and Lance.

yes, i agree this is a knock on djoker's legacy.

the 2012 uso final in 80 mph winds was utter fraud and that was one of the most pathetic matches ive ever witnessed.

djoker perhaps threw the 2013 wimby final under MI6 blackmail.

The Andy Murray argument is not only a "knock". It quite literally refutes your entire argument that Djoker is better because Federer played in a weak era.

Andy Murray. Not only lived through a school shooting, but if he'd existed in any other era, he might have at least temporarily been considered the GOAT, with a double digit slam count. Instead you have pinheads suggesting Stan Wawrinka is on his level.

Ironically, Andrew Luck is up there. Elite poise, elite abilty to read the field and run the offense, elite stature/size/strength, and, by all accounts, a hard worker. Having a couple of those makes for a great QB. He had all of them.

At any point from his junior year of college (2nd team All American as a junior, 1st team as a senior) through his first three years in the NFL (pro bowler each year), it seemed that he was well on his way to a hall of fame career. His floor was very good NFL QB. His ceiling was up there with Manning and Brady.

Then, came years of injuries and mismanagement by the Colts until he retired early. It's a huge "what could have been." Also, he was Norwood 3 by like 26 years old.

cr. was just listening to his episode of the All the Smoke podcast yesterday. Guy was literally on pace to be the GOAT. Ankle injury, followed by too soon return leading to near career ending surgeries and return as basically a role player.

I'm thinking about reading his autobiography.

John Stockton and Karl Malone deserve a mention. Two probably top-10 all time players who spent their entire careers playing together. But they never got a title do to a combination of overlapping both the Bird/Magic and the MJ eras and the fact that they played on a small market team that could never afford a decent supporting cast.

xo chael sonnen:

-has a chance to end anderson silva's historic title reign and is ragdolling him, completely cucking him, way up on the scorecards, then gets caught in a random triangle choke at the very end of the fight

-has another chance to end silva's historic reign and spends a round cucking him and asserting his physical dominance. in the second round, he slips on a fan-thrown banana peel while executing a perfect spinning backfist that would have been the knockout blow on a reeling silva. silva knocks him out with what the announcers immediately call an illegal knee to a downed opponent, "winning" the fight.

-has yet another chance to end jon jones's historic run of dominance and completely incapacitates him, gruesomely ripping jones's toe off his foot in what observers unanimously agree should have resulted in a doctor's stoppage. the fraud ufc refuses to stop the fight because jones is a bigger draw and sonnen is downed by a lucky strike after which the fight is prematurely stopped in favor of jones. it has mostly been scrubbed from the internet, but i have cell phone footage of dana white jumping up out of his chair screaming "ring the bell, ring the fucking bell!" while Sonnen is still clearly intelligently defending

basically, sonnen was the better man against two p4p all time greats across three different fights but still somehow never came away with the belt.

Monica Seles was winning the lion's share of major titles until a Graf fan stabbed Seles in the back to help Graf. Graf won most of her major titles after that.
