pensions largely went away for anyone who entered the workforce post Reagan (i.e. 1981 onwards) and for those have recently retired or are on the cusp of retiring (i.e. the baby boomers born in the early 60s) most will still have a significant share of their networth tied up in the stockmarket (albeit in index funds etc)
