Date: March 25th, 2026 7:20 PM Author: gibberish (?) What's the point of taking the island? What does it accomplish? It's not like the US gets all 90% of the Iranian oil if they take it. The oil still has to be piped over from the mainland. If the US wanted to end Iranian oil they could do it at any time without firing a single shot or destroying Iranian infrastructure. The US would only have to announce an embargo and any ship in violation will be confiscated. So there are much easier and less costly means of removing oil revenue from Iran. The US has chosen not to do this.
Similarly, the focus on the straight is also more symbolic. Over half of the ships Iran attacked were miles away from the straight in the red sea. Iran doesn't need to control the straight to disrupt oil shipping. They can easily hit ships at sea from much further away. It would only take a couple for shipping lines to halt movement. The US could also announce that they are closing the straight - again, embargo and confiscate any ship that makes passage.
