GNR is very arguably not hair metal though. Sure, first album they had the hair metal "look" but their music was different.

Ozzy used to really like GNR back then FWIW

Appetite was the epitome of the sound that started with Ozzy and NY Dolls. There certainly were bands that took it farther into schtick territory, but GNR took it to the limits of credibility on that album
