When I worked retail in HS and UG I came across as borderline retarded, and definitely wasn't as good at my job as my coworkers, none of whom had any college under their belt. I'm very good at the career that I'm in now, which most would consider much more difficult (considering most have a Masters in my field) than retail. Has any1 else had this experience where they were a total dumb in their hourly job but highly proficient in their actual career field?

I worked at Starbucks, was a fucking retard. Always fucked shit up, manager never put me on register. Now I'm an underemployed lawyer with a T14 JD, I sure showed them!

Worked a Lowes hardware store. I felt so incompetent at my job and was always fucking shit up. Now I'm in BIGLAW and doing a pretty good job.

this is reassuring. it's actually good that i had this experience because it keeps me from being a condescending prick to people in retail. I will never say something like "HOW HARD IS YOUR JOB?" I remember when I was working at a liq. store in UG and this old lady called me dumb to my face because i couldn't find the beer she was looking for. It was right where she was pointing, but it took me about thirty seconds to actually pick it out.

Haha yeah, I have some similar horror stories. Definitely made me treat service works with respect and I never really complain about my job because I know how much worse it can get (and for $10/hr). People look at me weird when I say this, but in a lot of ways it was the hardest job I've ever had.

sucked at retail in HS/UG. people think that because a job doesn't require much thinking that a smart college kid should be able to do well at it, but its the fact that it doesn't require any thinking that college-educated people often suck. It's like your brain shuts off because its not being challenged. Some people are just far better at thinking with their hands. I'm not one of those people.

this means so much less in NYC than anywhere else

in the rest of the company, its acceptable for smart white teens to work retail. in NYC 90% of service and retail employees are immigrants so if you can speak english clearly you get offered a manager position the first month

started as the cart pusher at Target. I was promoted to cashier, then guest service, then sales floor, then sales floor Toys at Christmas season all within a year. My fellow employees were middle-aged mindless apes.
