I remember Moravec's predictions more clearly, but essentially the argument was that AI progress would have to wait until 2010-2020, where the power required to fuel models with similar computing resource as the brain. Compute is the magic ingredient since algorithms and patterns are learnable when you can train on vast amounts of data. Even credible skeptics like Scott Aaronson who said he was very wrong have done a complete 180
