i looked at the specs and watched a review from my go to bass guy, Johnny Lee Long (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFF-W9de_m0). He's playing a 6 string but it's otherwise an identical bass.

He has a lot of good things to say consistent with ibanez in general. Great build quality, wood, finish and ergonomics. And at the conclusion of the video he said he liked it.

I listened to the video with headphones. The tone is very clean but I think lacks character or distinctive quality. As he cycled through various pickup and EQ configurations, i didn't really hear much difference in the tone and thought it lacked presence. around the 14 minute mark forward he started messing more with the mids and pickup blend and was able to get some more interesting tones. Still for a bass with an active preamp and a mid-shift knob, it seemed to lack versatility. That's my impression, but I could be wrong.

The bartolini pickups may be kind of meh, so i think an upgrade with EMGs like suggested in the video could bring out the true potential in the bass. I think that would be around $120-150.

He did describe the neck as "chunky" which would be an issue for me. I'm guessing the bass is on the heavier side too and just seems a little clunky. It's also a 35" as opposed to 34" scale which is something to consider (my cirrus is a 35" scale too, which is the only thing I would change about it). I'm also not a huge fan of the looks. I don't really like the single cutaway and i think going with a muted black finish on the wood on front with a rich deep red on the back was a misstep and the front should be red too. A lot of this is personal preference.

Like most ibanezes, this thing clearly punches above its weight and if you can get one for <$1,000, it's a great value as a neckthru with nice woods and a seemingly good quality preamp. Of course, it's made in indonesia so the cost of production is much less than brands like spector or warwick. there does not seem to be an enthusiast community for this bass, so it may be hard to unload if you want to sell it someday.

Last bit, I think you should consider your intended uses. If you are mostly a guitarist and just want a bass to pick up and tool around with from time to time, I don't think this is the one. I'm not a big fan of complicated electronics and would find the mid selector annoying and confusing.

I never said it sounded bad. I said it has a very clear but forgettable tone. It sounds very thin even when the pickup blend is midway. I stand by my comments and will even do a similar video with my cirrus to show you what i mean.

The fret buzz would bug me especially every time he hit a B on the E string.

My band mate has a 6 string version of this. I think it’s this one:

I’ve played it a bunch and it’s pretty badass. Lots of cool details

Update: GC had a 10% off deal for this, so I ordered it. They are going to set it up for free before mailing it to me. First time Ive ever ordered a guitar online without playing it first, but I figure a thiccc bass is safer to do this with

Copped and its beautiful - even the boomer in my office with like 25 $3k guitars came in and commented on the finish

The strings seem old. Also if I play the low B string around the neck pickup, it gets pretty flobby. That cleans up a lot if I pick closer to the bridge. I read that you can get strings with variable tension for this sort of thing - Dupa do you have any advice for a 5 string for this?
