This is about as climatic as Oklahoma passing a bill defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

I love Al, but I can't believe this. Dude went from: SNL ---> Couple books flaming Rush Limbaugh--> Working at a failed radio station---> U.S. Senator.

More unlikely paths to Senate in modern era?

For any home state other than Minnesota it would be weird. But they elect crazy people up there pretty regularly.

Dean Barkley, though he was appointed rather than elected.

And, to be fair, Minnesota had the only actual, honest-to-god Communist ever on Capitol Hill, though that was back in the 30s.

Here is the decision, btw.

http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/OPA090697-6030.pdf

What is it with courts issuing per curiam decisions in important election law cases?

They want to reduce the risk that it will be used as precedent.

yes but also because of the political implications they want to make the opinion seem as impersonal as possible. When the inanimate court is issuing the decision, rather than particular individuals, people are less likely to make accusations of impropriety.

I would say that it prevents anyone from holding the unanimous decision against any particular member of the panel, but that certainly didn't stop everyone from talking about "Sotomayor's decision" in Ricci.
