Anyone else getting the sense that anyone saying they want to do litigation is having a much harder time of it in OCI 2010?

There's a V5 where I don't know a single person from my T6 who has managed to land a litigation offer, including one dude who was practically a fucking Rhodes scholar. I know several people with much worse credentials who managed to snag offers by saying they were interested in corp, though.

Talked to a friend in corp at a V25, and he said that at his firm so many 2009/2010 grads switched from corp to lit when the economy crashed that now lit is overwhelmed and the firm is barely hiring anyone who seems more likely to want lit over corporate.

Anyone else getting this sense? Or am I just bitter because I'm an aspiring litigator sitting here on Sept 9 with still no offer in hand?

I don't think so. You can ask for whatever but I think firms will put you where there is a need unless you have some weird background in a niche area or are a CPA or something.

doubt it. Looking at lateral attorney recruiting sites; seems like most openings are still for litigation. Very few looking for corporate, especially outside NYC, though financing/lending associates are sorta in demand. IP and ERISA/Tax are also robust.

Perhaps there isnt strong (or even weak) correlation between 2L hiring and lateral hiring, but sorta doubt it. Don't think any firm can tell if 2+ years from now M&A will be booming and litigation has always been fairly robust in all economic times.

PSA: firms don't care what you say you're interested in unless a) it's something they don't do, or b) you come across as an idiot.

They do not look at OCI interviewees as aspiring litigators or dealmakers- they look at them as malleable slave labor.

I don't think that's true at every firm. See Cravath where you have to come in as a corporate summer or a litigation summer.

lol; true in that you have to pick a group before the summer, false in that Cravath tottally views you as malleable slaves and not potential great dealmakers or trial lawyers

Wrong. My firm (do not know about others) is dinging people who are only interested in litigation. They're giving offers almost exclusively to those who say they want to do corporate work, and are in fact seeking them out during OCI. We certainly care. It's right there on our evaluation form.

Yeah bro, you're right. We tried to keep it under wraps but you've exposed the TRUTH-- litigation in biglaw is dead, and no one is hiring any law students who might be interested in it. Right now we're only interested in hiring for corporate, since the mergers and IPO markets are so busy right now. At your next interview tell them you only want to do structured fin, you'll be fine.

The weird thing about this stagnant recovery/beginning of double-dip is that there IS a lot of M&A activity. See, e.g., Potash, 3PAR, Burger King, etc.

Do you know what you're talking about?

As my post above explains, your thoughts are accurate, at least for my firm. We are really only looking to hire corporate people -- they've been getting offers, and litigation people have been getting dinged.

You're right. Firms are not interested in hiring lit associates given the fact that we are in a double dip recession and therefore in 2012 companies won't sue each other as much because of the double dip recession that occurred in 2010 compounded by student loan defaults, stagflation, and other things that angsty XOXO pessimists like to prattle about. this is not even taking into account outsourcing to india.

I've done some research on this-could be the effect of the double dip recession.
