Attorneys at these firms doing multi-million dollar cases don't even do any of the grunt work. They farm it out to medical review companies who basically work up the case for you, i.e., compile the medicals into an organized file complete with a nice summary and locate and generate expert reports for you. Then the attorney charges these costs (which would typically be borne by the attorney in the form of, you know, performing the work himself) to the client's portion of the settlement. Just lol.

huh? defense bros only get paid for the # of hours they work. they hoard all the work they possibly can. PI bros have an incentive to just farm out work on the client's dime, even work they are perfectly capable of doing, because they don't get paid for doing any of it.

at good firms the medical record review will more or less be farmed out because it's not worth an associate's time

not in my experience. i worked very briefly at an ID firm that handled tons of wrongful death shit and they had all the associates doing the dumbest makework possible. "oh go and review that stack of medicals for the 3rd time and summarize". "oh go and review every piece of evidence and summarize it." "pls provide procedural summary for the client for the 10th time". it's all just BS to inflate hours at defense firms. i've never heard of defense firms willingly giving hours away. the rates are absurdly low.

if it's "high-end" pi then you're not defending the insurance company.

And if they do, they get paid nothing for that, since their earnings are based on the billable hour.

while its true that expert medical reports and shit are crucial in these cases, the lawyers still have to do some work. Depositions are key as fuck in these cases, and you have to have your shit together going into the depo.

Correct me if I am wrong, but these things don't even start to settle until after depos are done, a lot of the time, right?

these things won't settle until after the defense has taken YOUR witnesses depos. they OFTEN will settle without plaintiffs taking a single depo.
