Are you trying to suggest the trough is something other than approximately twice as deep as the next deepest trough?

Sure, because it'd be real easy to tell discrepancies between lines if the scale went from 0 to 1

He thinks he's incisive because he had some sort of "media awareness" class at some point. Now, without really knowing what the fuck he's talking about, he spouts shit like "correlation, not causation" and "look at the scale!" as if he's saying something important.

Seriously. It's not the scale that matters as much as how our current recession matches up with previous ones, which is the point the OP was trying to make.

Also how FUCKED we are for jobs for at least 2-3 years based on previous recessions, and this isn't even including some double dip scenerio

so that chart is saying we've lost 6% of american jobs and have not gained any of them back yet? super.

not really.

those other crises on the chart were nothing compared to the current one. OPEC, S&L, tech bubble, japan & european crises, etc, all seem relatively small time.

disclaimer, admittedly I know basically nothing about economics, but I find the comparison shown on that chart to be quite expected.

not saying we're not fucked, but I don't see that this provides any particular insight or even a dramatic revelation of perspective.

of course, but isn't it fair to say that what we've got now involves both a greater magnitude and greater variety of serious systemic problems?

well, like I said I know nothing about economics so maybe the comment just demonstrates cluelessness.

but, to clarify:

of course this is gigantic fucking deal. we're probably fucked. but didn't we know this already? my point was only that the chart is not surprising and doesn't "show" anything that hasn't been apparent for at least a year.

link?

the other charts I see only go back to the post-WW2 period, whose decline I would expect is explained by the cessation of debt-financed war spending.

This recession is the worst because instead of industries going under, they just chose to outsource the jobs to deal with the recession. The outsourcing would've happened eventually the recession just sped up the process.
