True question here, do defacements like this take place often at Harvard? This almost seems like the actions of someone sympathetic to the cause of advancing equality, and that it was done to create a lightning rod for discussion. It would also take longer to put up pieces of removable tape then to quickly scribble a magic marker over the faces.

Really hard -- really hard -- to imagine anyone who is not anti-black doing something like this. How would you not know it would be received as a punch in the gut by the black students and, indeed, anyone who believes in equality? It's been years since I was on campus but I was never aware of this happening and never heard of it happening before I arrived or since I left (in 1994), to answer the question.
