Has anyone been on one? What's the structure?

Any tips?

I'm not top 10% or law review, so I'm somewhat surprised I received one during OCI. At a t6. None of the other callbacks from my school were LR or top 10% either. Would they really fly us all back for shits & giggles?

This question is relevant to my interests.

In answer to your last question, I'm sure you're in serious consideration. But I also know they're serious about their clerking requirement. So I would guess that part of what their decision will hinge on is whether or not they think you're likely to land a clerkship.

emphasize your uncle's position as an ALJ, and that he said he could totally hook you up with a volunteer clerkship last thanksgiving.

I was under the impression that if they want you, they can help you (aka all-but-secure you) a clerkship due to their connections and clout in the market.

I have no doubts about my chance to land a clerkship. Probably not in a major market, but I have ties to less prestigious/competitive areas.

Hmm. I like this. So it all comes down to assuring them you can rip off opponents' heads and shit down their necks at will.

Looks like they have a few 5th COA judges in Houston who they feed/get clerks fed to them... a cursory look at a few of the Houston profiles show that.

I would think so. But I read an interview with Susman recently where he said when he opened the firm, he actually wanted to recruit TTT grads or people at the bottom of the class because they often end up being better trial lawyers than strivers. However, he said he was overruled by the firm (1 member, 1 vote) who wanted to go for the strivers (the best attract the best, essentially).

I am confident enough that I can make the 6 people or however many people I meet with think I can do it, but I'm worried about the other 35 people (although I'm not 100% sure if the entire firm votes on hiring, or only individual offices).

At least half of the people they called back from my school were neither 10% nor LR, and the person they hired was not LR. They want trial lawyers, so be outgoing. If you are runner up for a position, they may keep in touch just in case their SA doesn't find a clerkship--so don't burn bridges. You absolutely will not get an associate position if you don't get a federal clerkship, but they're totally fine with district.

Thanks for the information.

I'm more concerned about getting a job this summer at the moment. The rest will fall into place. They're by far my top choice.

No flame. Why would it be? If you do quality work and they want you back, I'm more than confident they'll be able to give you a huge boost in clerkship hunting. I'd bet that there isn't a single Susman summer who had their offer to revoke because they couldn't secure a district court clerkship.

Yes. I'm confident I'll find somewhere to split.

But Susman is easily my top choice, and I would definitely be more than willing to bust my ass for those 4 weeks to land a contingent-upon-clerking offer.
