What prevented someone like me from being 100% sure was Trump's potential self-destruction with an own goal just before the election, which couldn't be ruled out entirely.
I was always a big fan of JD Vance from day 1. |

Date: February 20th, 2025 2:41 PM Author: Charles Tyrwhitt Dad What I remember during the weird late summer of 2024 was polling showing Kaki Hari zooming up past Trump after the conference, but she never hit 50% (neither did he) but given his historical underperforming in the polls versus the actual outcome, if you overlaid that onto the 2024 polls, he was in the lead and favored to win. And that is what happened.
There was plenty of talk on whether the main polling firms had corrected for the misses in 2020 and 2016 and some claimed they had. But oh boy they did not. And remember the Iowa poll right before the election that showed Trump trailing Kaki Hari when he went on to win by 15 points?

but yeah my experience was just like yours. not only his historic overperformance, but you could just feel it in the air. the polls and reporting just didn't reflect what i could see with my two eyes. from 2016-2023 you could only speak positively about trump in hushed tones amongst people you could trust. suddenly even in my shitlib area i was seeing trump flags that i never saw before. i remember watching the verdict with my ex's lib dad and he was aghast at how frivolous, stupid, and obviously wrong it was.
ultimately i was very happy with the polling showing trump down because his victory seemed so sure at times i was worried about him getting hillary'd with people not bothering to show up. |

It was the Selzer Iowa poll that was the death knell for me. The poll made no sense, Iowa went even redder between 2020 and the 2022 midterms so that it would do a complete 180 in a massive way was ridiculous. That's when I told myself officialdom was unconsciously preventing itself from being serious about asking the right polling questions and trying to correct their past misses, but they couldn't bring themselves to do it. So you knew it was garbage in, garbage out. |
