it's even better in retrospect now that the AI Future is upon us. at the time it was probably lost on a lot of viewers that the "supergenius creates Machine God by himself in a couple years" trope was rooted in a very real dilemma facing us in the not too distant future

Person of Interest is a weird fucking example brother, it was on network TV, a top 20 show with ~15 million viewers. If that doesn't count as people giving a shit, then what does?

I'll go with "The Expanse," which was loved by critics but so economically unviable on SciFi that it jumped to Amazon and at also wasn't viable there. By contrast it was lucky to crack a million viewers.

it was extremely hyped the first season but fell off pretty quickly with the public, well before the show really hit its stride. the last season (only the 5th, mind you) was a half season they barely got clearance for that ran during the dead period close to summer. it was largely ignored by most critics who just wrote it off as "CBS Procedural #149819". and obviously nobody talks about it today

damn, that's a tough call, I don't even remember the names but there was the one about an alien invasion with the doctor from ER and another about the apocolypse with skeeter something or other that were both oddly compelling

Despite its success, I believe the X Files was underrated for how well-written some of the episodes were and how different it was from most television at the time. Not only did they write tight episodes that were deceptively procedural to transmit melancholic philosophical ideas, but they did it consistently in tight 40 minute episodes - at least 22 per season while contending with Studio Notes. That's not even getting into the shrewd predilictions of the horrors of globalism that permeated the entire series from seasons 1-5, and the uniquely erudite and platonic relationship between the two leads.

Bro, when X-Files originally ran it was one of the biggest shows on network TV. "Mulder & Scully" is an almost universally recognized term now and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson become global stars because of the show. It also still has a pretty big following.
