When I was a kid we used to have a major crash every couple of years, sometimes multiple ones. Popular Mechanics even ran this issue in 1995:

Now it’s just dumb stuff like some bolts fell off a door but the plane landed safely.

lessons learned from every crash make planes/air travel safer + US requires waaaaaay more minimum hours for pilots than foreign carriers.

Were there legitimately more crashes per mile or whatever in the 80s and 90s? Or were they just huge stories because cable news was getting started.

WIND SHEAR was a big deal in the early 90s. My impression is that advanced radar has basically made it no longer a deadly issue.

What was the last major hull loss incident where everyone died? Excluding smaller regional jets. The queens crash from 2001? It’s pretty wild that they are this reliable.

Yes, that's the last one. And the last regional hull loss was the 2009 crash near Buffalo.

I have yet to read a convincing explanation beyond some variant of "they made improvements and learned from past mistakes." It's probably just luck. Sooner or later there will be a crash caused by faulty design, outsourced maintenance to Latin America, DEI hiring for pilots/ATCs, etc.

For a while the explanation I always heard and believed was that there were so many boomer pilots with decades of experience working for US carriers that pilot errors had become increasingly uncommon and successful troubleshooting of in-flight issues by those boomers was common. But those boomers have been retiring for over a decade now and we still have safe air travel so I no longer think that’s the reason.
