I fucking hate clients and dealing with opposing counsel. I get sick when 2Ls come to interviews and talk about how they want client contact and court appearances and early experience writing and working a case. I wish I could just research minute points of law and then go home without thinking about the shitty case all night.

I either work on fucking shit cases where I'm just trying to hold my own until the other side floats a settlement offer, or I work on good cases and the client cuts all my fucking bills and asks why it costs so much to win such an easy case. Lit is fucking terrible. Transactional is also terrible though, because everyone has some banal fucking input or changes and some minutia can take forever to resolve because there's no filing deadline.

Are you in biglaw? How do you know a case is shit when the partner walks in your office and asks "do you have some time to work on a case?" Also, I've been on pretty much the same "trial team" of 3-8 attorneys for the last few years, so the partner on the team knows when one of my cases has just ended.

Well I've been in biglaw so I have no ability to go out and start my own firm. I was thinking the other day of not using my secretary for a month and just ask her how to do things. That way I'll know how to file shit and serve shit if/when I open my own firm.

the key is weeding out shitty cases (I'm on contingency). I spend a lot of time early on looking ALL the relevant documents. If I've got a winner, that's almost money in the bank.

Sounds sweet. How soon till you float a settlement offer? I imagine you wouldn't want to do it too soon, but once I had one in the hopper, I'd be chomping at the bit to let loose an offer, because then I make my money. In biglaw it's the opposite.

When the case sucks, it's rough. They don't want to admit they fucked up. This is especially true when the client doesn't have a general counsel, so you deal directly with a CEO/President, because they have huge egos and no one tells them no.

It's nice when your case is an easy winner. But clients are hard then, too.

The worst is opposing counsel. There's like one decent opposing counsel I've ever one with. The rest want to challenge fucking everything. It's unreal.

client contact sucks as a first year (can you PLEASE sign this, asshole. We're going to blow the renewal of the license/default on your term loan/miss a milestone notice in a P&S if you don't - STOP FUCKING IGNORING ME - ok now you're going to answer and be a dick?)

It gets better with time and new tasks.

It all depends on the situation. I HATED it at my last firm where the client relationships with the firm were about as deep as a puddle and the partners were ultra sensitive to any possible thing that could go wrong with the client relationship.

But I really enjoy it at my new firm (well, not really new now, been here for 3+ years) where most of our clients have been clients for a long ass time and we have complete control over them. Whatever my partner says goes with them. He is like God in their eyes - can do no wrong. And I could totally fuck something up and my partner is like "no big deal I got your back". When you have that kind of freedom and security it becomes a lot more fun to talk with clients.

WTF? Client contact is the best - you bill as a client talks about the weather and shit.

The best is when its the client + a bunch of others in a conference call. Take the call from your office and just fuck around online for half the time.
