by fasted i mean nothing after dinner the night before. nothing crazier than that.

yeah i generally don't eat before i lift either. then i'll come home and make a pretty heavy protein shake (1 banana, frozen raspberries, 50g whey, regular fat milk, 1 tsp peanut butter, water, ice)

I started going on AM walks Sunday, must have slipped a disk because I could barely move yesterday.

Running an 800 calorie deficit, and only exercise is walking 3 miles in the morning.

Going to start incorporating resistance training 3x/week once my back stops pain spasming

Hoping to drop 50-60 pounds by the end of the year, but would be happy with 35-40 pounds.

If I run an 800 calorie deficit for a 15 months - I could reach my goal weight of 165-170 by August 2025.

What ratio of that will be fat loss is my concern.

How much lean body mass can I maintain?

Author: Concerned Chad Here,

Lean body mass is not nearly as fixed or fragile as people think, and it comes back with good diet and resistance training. Just lose the weight, try to eat decent protein and lift some weights during the cut, and worry about building the lean mass back after the fact. Source: I'm a former elite athlete and have gone up and down in weight, strength and fitness many times, and lean mass always comes back when you train for it.

I'm 38 and have never been an athlete, let alone elite.

Got a dexa scan done couple years ago was at 45% body fat with LBM of ~144 pounds.

I'll take your advice and stay consistent and lose weight and then try to build back up.

Not to put the cart ahead of the horse, but, lets say August next year, I'm able to drop down to 165/170 pounds, but I'm at say 25-30% body fat. What's the move then?

Also, thanks for the non-flame feedback.

If you lift weights hard 4-5 times per week and get 1g of protein per cm in height the muscle will not degrade during a cut.

that's a lot of protein to be stuffing down my gullet... I'll try, I can comfortably get in between 130-150g protein daily. Getting closer to 200 becomes an issue.

Also, I don't think I have the recovery to lift 4-5 times per week -- can probably do 3

Author: Concerned Chad Here,

People differ on how much protein is necessary for particular goals and even get pretty heated about it but I'd say you'd probably be fine getting 130-170 every day.

Food that you aren't super stoked about eating a lot of may be exactly what you need to focus on eating

Author: Concerned Chad Here,

If you've never had much LBM then even better, you'll get newbie gains once your weight stabilizes and you start lifting with adequate protein. I'd say focus on the weightloss and then once at your goal weight get into a steady-state lifestyle of 3-5x per week cardio (spinbike at home is my favorite method for this now), 3x per week full-body weight training and a good maintenance diet. Don't get depressed if and when you backslide... just acknowledge it, remember you're an adult male with personal agency and get back on track.

I'm committed to this routine and hoping I can still get in decent shape naturally.

Fasted lifting works great for weight loss in conjunction with cardio but it's not ideal for getting strong and muscular.

I know because even though the leangains program/protocol changed my life and got me back in shape, once you're actually in shape you will make much better progress by eating a pre workout meal. Intense lifting after 12+ hours of fasting is not gonna be possible. You need fuel.

Guy at my gym days this destroys metabolism and you'll gain a bunch of weight as soon as you stop running every morning in a fasted state.
