I think most people with real jobs could write this email in 5 minutes quite easily?
I'm not sure why they are acting like its a dictatorship for the president to ask employees what they're working on...

The lead story on CNN is about the emails and how unions are challenging it

Regular people with real jobs really underestimate the number of people in this country who have never had a real job in their entire life and who don't even have a mental model for what it would be like
There are like 100 million adults in this country who are part of the parasite class who either don't work at all and just collect benefits or who work for the government, NGOs, have affirmative action or email jobs, etc. Most of these people genuinely do not understand that regular people with real jobs actually do work when they are at work. They live in an essentially completely alternate reality where they assume that nobody else does any work either and the world has already achieved Fully Automated Luxury Star Trek Space Communism and the only conflicts in the world are due to Evil Racists being Evil For The Sake Of Evil Hate
The reason why they are reacting so strongly to this is because it's a legitimate threat to them. None of them do anything at all at "work" and to explicitly point this out to them or try to force them to point it out to others is a real, serious threat and an extremely hostile action

It’s a waste of everyone’s time. With rumors that Elon wants to cut the workforce by half people are freaking out about what to say. Management scheduled a Monday meeting. Meanwhile there are rules against putting confidential info in communications outside the department, forcing the GCs office to provide guidance over the weekend.
This is the first time department/agency heads are pushing back against DOGE. They’re fed up with this as well.

I've said this before and I'll say it again:
1. We have shit labor protections in this country and while I'm all in on MAGA, I think that needs to change. Firing people should be harder, parental leave should be better, overtime should be more limited, etc.
2. While we ALL deserve greater protections, I have less sympathy for government workers than most. They're experiencing a fraction of what most of us have experienced in the private sector while providing far less value. Fuck them.

Job protections get in the way of MAGA. We need fluid, fierce capitalistic competition in order to make progress and not fall into the european socialist/leisure trap.

To be fair,
3. Private sector unions absolutely deserve ARE support and I am 100% in favor of dramatically strengthening labor protections for private sector workers across the bort on both a federal and a state level.
4. Public sector unions are an ENTIRELY different beast, and frankly they shouldn't even exist in the first place. Don't like that, governmentcucks? Feel free to hop on over to the private sector, my friends -- I hear you're all extremely qualified and highly capable folx with a ton of relevant and in-demand marketable skills, so I'm sure you'll be snapped up quickly and paid handsomely by all off the companies that would love to employ you! ;)

Let me play devil's advocate. Yes, I'm a fed.
Most fed workers don't have a problem sending an email like this (some do). The question is what OPM will do with it. Clearly, they're on the warpath as far as cutting workers, so people might be concerned that OPM will decide that their response wasn't "good enough" and they'll get axed. But does OPM have the knowledge to adequately assess each response from so many different departments and agencies? It's like telling me the stats of some cricket player. I don't know how to judge that, but maybe I'm deciding if he should be fired.
Is that the case? Nobody knows. But it's understandable to have some trepidation when some group that's been tasked with cutting the workforce and has no subject matter knowledge about your work is asking, "what did you do last week?" People on X are saying, "Private sector employees get asked this all the time. Stop whining." Yeah, maybe they do...by their boss. This is more like the Bobs from Office Space, but with less subject matter knowledge. It's a different dynamic.
I'm reading now that maybe OPM is just checking for dead or phantom employees who are getting paid.
Also, Elon said in a tweet that failure to respond would be treated as a resignation. Could you at least put that in the fucking email instead of tweeting about it? I think it's fair to ask that anything job-related should be conveyed through work channels and not random comments in the media or on social media.
Also, a lot of these emails about the buyout, return-to-office, etc., are pretty poorly drafted. The email I got about RTO from the Secretary of my department was really unclear and used a lot of different terms interchangeably, so we have no idea what it actually means for us. A lot of the frustration is from all the confusion surrounding these actions, not just the actions themselves.
I know the comments you seen from fed employees about all this are quite histrionic, and yes, there's a lot of entitlement there. There's a lot of ways that fed workers deserve your ire but DOGE/OPM are not without fault.
Thank.

while somewhat reasonable, youre starting from a mistaken premise, as are the more hysterical feds reacting to this.
your premise is, "Ordinary employees should be treated with a good deal of respect and be given the benefit of the doubt by their employers." You move on from this premise to "shoddily crafted emails and confusing PR campaigns and blurred chains of authority are disrespectful, make enemies of employees, etc".
Here's the thing -- all of that applies to ordinary employees. You are NOT one. You are employed by every citizen who must pay you under threat of violence. Thats a really big fucking difference.
I have NO choice about whether to pay you. Because if I withhold your salary, because you suck, or you actively try to kill me, or it just doesnt make sense anymore, etc... I get locked in a cage at gunpoint.
That means our relationship is VERY different than the usual employer-employee relationship. Your employers are tax payers, and a gun pointed at the boss maintains the employment contract. This means I dgaf about "respecting" you, or all that bullshit. It simply doesnt apply. You want that job, those dollars that are taken from me violently? You accept this dynamic and be ready to do shit ordinary employees dont have to deal with.
Dont like it? go get a real job

I agree with your post. I'm watching DOGE's activities with keen interest for a range of reasons and can agree that a lot of the messaging is badly done. Even in private sector mass layoffs, which can be abrupt and brutal, there is still more respect for employees than what we've seen with some of the DOGE activities. The lack of professionalism ignores that they're dealing with human beings at the other end of the emails and messing with their lives in this manner is cruel, not just the looming threat of RIFs but all the uncertainty over what they can still do or not do. All one needs is a simple message straight to the point and not in a "gotcha" style. Contrary to what too many posters on this bored seem to want to believe, most Fed workers are decent people doing a decent job.
I don't doubt Musk and Trump will achieve most of their goals with the permanent humiliation of the bureaucracy and some of it was probably necessary, but this scorched earth approach does make me wince. They are betting on that in a year from now with 50% RIF enacted and the agencies a shell of their former selves and budgets gutted, Americans will move on to the next red button topic and there's probably truth to it in our world of limited attention spans. In the meantime it still sucks for many people in the Feds and wishing you best of luck.
