Agreed. I think its because GenX was inherently a scum generation. n64 was a console created by Losers for Losers. Scum are immediately repulsed by and seek to dominate Losers. They can sense how Losery N64 is and want to bully anyone who has it. I can specifically remember Gen X scumbags yelling "IT HAS NO GAMES!" at my losery ass, as I quietly sulked and took it.

Why wasn’t Turok enough for them though? Imo they were already losing their own gen and couldn’t bear to lose a console gen. Also the Nintendo brand had a Losery/kiddie image despite like 80% of the third party games being Scum.

The THIRD PARTY games were scum sure, but the nintendo platformers were all Loser. And you have to remember there were NO ADVERTISEMENTS. So scum might not have been aware of what was available. Turok was a game I personally never played I think I was too much of a Loser for that. I played Mario 64, Zelda, Smash Brothers, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Wave Racer 64, Banjo Kazooie, Starwars Shadows of the Empire, Starwars Episode 1 racer. I had jetforce gemini but I didn't really like it. Also I had quest 64, paper mario, and harvest moon 64.

The only ads were for when the system came out (“change the system”). But from 1997-2000 you would expect to hear the signature PlayStation commercial intro and outro every 15 minutes on mtv or football

Remember the Dreamcast commercial "It's thinking". System made a loud as fuck weird noise too and commercial was obviously a cute play on that. My Losery brain loved that at 10 or whatever.

Golden Eye on the N64 was the greatest dorm room video game of all time. Granted that’s only the last third or so of Gen X, but mostly what explains the Gen X aversion to Nintendo consoles after the mid 90s is getting old but not having kids of their own and being the entire market for PC gaming for the 95-05 period. An older Gen X gamer in this period was far more likely to want to spend more on upgrades for his PC than buy an N64. But younger Gen X loved the N64 and loved Golden Eye more than any other game except the top 5 or so titles on the OG NES.

We loved those two games on that console so much that we all bought Game Cubes to play basically the exact same game again on a new console. And I think we were the only people that fell for it based on Game Cube sales figures.

PS good job laying some cover to pretend you’re in your 40s and not in your 50s, Doodikoff. And congrats on the Bama win but condolences on the Auburn loss.

Cowshit knows all. Gen X were PS1 bros. They made fun of n64 for having No Games like all Scum/Jocks did. Maybe some Losers from gen x liked N64 but most of the Losers in GenX were too afraid to Lose the Console Wars and that risk aversion stopped them from getting involved.

That’s because late boomers/early gen x have a strong connection to Nintendo because of the Color-TV-Game, which was Huge with your age cohort. Many GIs brought them back from Viet Nam and GenXers became intrigued by them. Gen X Sinophiles and aznphiles identified strongly with Nintendo early on and it was a symbol of their generational identity. Late Gen Xers on the other hand had a strong affinity for Sony as well as all non-Nintendo consoles

You are clearly looking at global sales numbers and not tracking by region. PS1 sold 40M in the Americas, but another 60M outside the U.S. v n64 which sold 20M in the Americas which was over 60% of its total sales. N64 was specifically marketed to the U.S. to play defense against the PS1, and it was not a total failure but at best a very qualified success of stopping the bleeding, viewing it purely in terms of US sales. You’re also likely conflating PS2, which was obviously a transformative event and had an epic run of the three GTA titles plus the two gran turismos that both did over 10M units. In the mid-late 90s Nintendo was still seen as the premier console brand given their massive success in the 80s, and it was Sega that was viewed as a remarkable and rapid collapse after being the clear Pepsi to Nintendo’s Coke for 10 years prior to the PS1 launch.

Am I wrong that you can still play N64 games, and they're a little rough, but there is still a lot of fun and beauty in them?

Whereas Playstation games are basically unplayable now and just feel like really shitty games.

This was true even back then. PS1 coasted on FMVs, JP/EU/3rd world sales, TV Commercials, and shitting on Nintendo (“a cigarette and a blindfold”)

Even contemporaneously FF7 was like “wtf is this Lego shit.”
