My recollection is The Long Walk set the walking speed at 4 mph which is pretty brisk. I would have thought a casual stroll would be at or above 2.25 mph

You should mostly run long and slow with one day a week for sprints (100 or 200 m repeats). Work in Zones 2 and Zone 5.

Add mobility and strength and your future self will thank you.

If 2.25 miles was taxing you probably need to run slower. Subtract your age from 220 and that’s your estimated max heart rate. You should be running between 50-70 percent of that. So if you’re 40, your long and slow should be sustainable for 45 minutes without going over 126 bpm. For most out of shape people that starts as vigorous walking.

Felt like I could have gone for another 2 miles or so at the same pace before I really had to slow down or needed a longer break. I just had to get back to work. I have to make money for my betters.

CR. This morning, I did 3 hilly miles and stretched. Feeling great now. It's amazing how much better I feel after working out than on days I don't.

I'll do this again today but what should my goal be? Do I run 4.5 miles at the same pace? 4.5 miles slower? 2.25 miles faster and so some sprints mixed in?

running is the single stupidest form of exercise a middle aged man can do. Max powerlifting is a distant second.

people who get knee replacements are all 20 lbs+ overweight and the stress on the knee comes from the extra weight they carry around 24/7

But you should do it in a way that spares your joints, like cycling or swimming. Running is good, but in old age it should be used sparingly at higher pace, not for grinding out your long slow days.
