you know how easy it would be to conduct the same associate survey Vault does?
1) scrape list of firm websites from Vault or NLJ250
2) scrape associate email address from firm websites
3) dump list into aweber / constant contact / etc.
4) create nice looking fancy splash page for the rankings so it looks legit
5) create & embed survey from surveymonkey
6) blast an email out during bonus season when everyone is thinking about moving anyway and most associates want to shit on their firm. maybe even use the "anti vault" approach, say it's too NYC centric, something like that.
6a) blast a second email to those that don't open the first
7) use numeric scores 1-10 rating for various things like QoL, type of work, etc. so you can create really cool proprietary data charts, like OKCupid: http://blog.okcupid.com
8) write one blog post per week releasing some of the data with charts and whimsical / funny writing style, send it out to all the blawgs (ATL, WSJ blog, Law.com, AmLaw.com). you can do this all year long until the next year's survey goes out, as you could split the data every which way.
bam, rach. i just got you a legitimate audience and made xoxo relevant again. HTH
rach, besides the law firm ranking, you should use the data from LSN, make some cool graphics, wrap it in an interesting blog post (basically just ape OKCupid's style) and email it out weekly to blawgs.

seriously we could probably get a few thou associates spanning nyc, miami, la, and "overseas" to answer like 15 well-worded, relevant questions about their firm.

easy. sell an interview guide book, or a full guide to firms, or access to complete rankings, or a how to get into a top school (if you went the LSN route). create a foreign corp where ownership doesn't need to be disclosed (off the top of my head i think israeli corp laws are big on privacy, surprise surprise). sell the book through an affiliate company that pays out to foreign affiliates - almost all do. that's one of many ways to get paid and remain anonymous online.
