Date: December 28th, 2024 2:18 AM Author: ataraxic these are the kinds of singular jerbs where you can begin to have a reasonable discussion about H-1Bs. exotic options trader at jane street is a legitimately IQ-capped job and you're not going to teach an average shlub to do this well with the expectation of a normal 9-5 life. joe from nebraska is not being "replaced" here for lack of schooling or motivation. and any american capable of doing this job is going to get a high-paying job somewhere if not at jane street. IQ is a legitimate bottleneck here and stealing some 140 IQ indians isn't terrible.
practically: if a company has a need for someone who isn't an O-1 genius but who can do exceptional and unique work that is hard to replicate among the existing american population (probably someone earning $500k+ total comp minimum, and the company pays tax on his comp), maybe he can come if the company can show that it made a good faith effort to hire domestically. that's the compromise. and he comes and maybe starts a business one day and hires americans, cool.
the issue is the ~$100k jobs that are being farmed out. these are jobs that are the province of normies who just want to raise a family and not break their backs, not the superstrivers that vivek loves. if life is made impossible for these people, who are not begging for handouts but who just want to work and live average lives without having to salve away 100 hours a week, then we'll have an unending line bernies and AOCs in the white house until the country is dead. |
