I do like that this sort of testing is somewhat objective and insures that the fire fighters know the regulations when promoted. On the other hand, what you said is also true. Those in such positions need to be able to make command decisions based on complicated matters such as structural dynamics and combustion principles. Those are the most important qualities--knowing how to fight a fire that's engulfing a building when lives are at stake. The "soft" leadership factors are probably less important than the things one needs to study for hours on end to comprehend and apply in real life situations.
I'm not an expert, but I'm puzzled by the presumption that multiple choice tests are suboptimal for such positions. Is it because everyone envisions firefighters as dudes with hoses who occasionally help cats out of trees? |
