I need advice. I'm a 3rd year attorney in a major market. Went to a TTT. I want to work in securities litigation and regulation. Worked in finance before law school. But as an attorney I have only worked in plaintiff shitlaw. I have the chance to work in insurance defense. Would changing to insurance defense be a stepping stone towards securities??? Or will it not matter? Or am I already screwed so why even try....

you should start at a small securities litigation shitfirm, excel, and then move on and up.

I'm trying to do this but there aren't that many small securities firms out there, let along hiring, let alone want to hire someone with my stats.

I need to work in the interim.

Top 1/3 but TTT so my grades don't matter. The firms that want transcripts will auto-ding me because of my law school.

I have to start at a small firm. I have a better chance of being elected the next president of the United States than getting hired at a large firm.

so it's possible to switch to litigation? i'd think the other switch would make more sense for firms, since people are used to reading cases and doing a bit of writing when they graduate, but know nothing about corporate work.

a 4th year litigator is likely better than a fresh grad at corporate work, since he knows more about law, working at a law firm, dealing with clients and partners, etc. but a 4th year corporate guy who hasn't read a case or written a pleading since 3L - if he took a writing class - is worse at that stuff than a fresh grad.

how are you going to switch over to corporate with zero experience in corporate? Who is going to pay you a 4th year's salary for a 1st year's experience? People take huge pay cuts when moves like this are made and it usually means moving to a smaller/shittier firm too.

so taking a first year associate salary at a big firm wouldn't be an option as a lateral, huh? how does this make sense from the hiring firm's perspective? if you had good reviews and are switching because high level litigation or corporate work doesn't appeal to you, you're likely to be more efficient and knowledgeable than someone right out of school.

every firm is different but at my firm every associate works under one partner or a couple of the same partners in the group all the time. It may be a big firm, but you really only have those few bosses. If you are looking to switch practice areas I think it will be assumed its because you burned those bridges for whatever reason and those partners arent going to want to see your face. I've frankly never even heard of anyone at our firm ASKING to move to another group. When things are slow they may assign you to different partners in different groups, but its not by choice.

They dont give a shit about what you want. They dont believe the whole "Im more interested in XYZ practice area." It's all the same to them. You are there to bill and they figure you must have a personal problem with the partner or something like that.

I guess you could take a job at a midsize in the practice area you want and then try to get back into biglaw as a lateral.

I'll take 1st yr pay. I'm hoping my litigation experience (which is strong) plus finance background will be enough for a small firm to take a chance on me.

My options are plaintiff shitlaw at small firm or boring ass insurance defense at midsize firm.

I didn't have the pedigree for biglaw and fell into shitlaw after a crappy transactional SA position my 2L.

What have people who started a few years ahead of you at the shitlaw firm ended up doing?

What's the career trajectory like for junior insurance defense lawyers? I guess this is what you're asking about ITT.

What was crappy about the transactional SA position?

Mostly everyone has stayed in shitlaw, just bouncing around firms. A few have left law altogether.

As for the SA position, my boss was a screamer and I summarized regulations all day every day for the entire summer.

I don't see how you get into Sec reg out of ID or P shit.

If you want to open your own shop as a P shit attorney ID is pretty credited to get a FUCK TON of exp. and then lateral in as a partner as a shit firm.

Obviously this only works if you're really good. That being said there is a huge difference in skill and it won't be "law" skill it'll be "jury" skill.

I'd imagine if you want to do Sec Reg, join some sort of association, start reading a lot of shit and then maybe try to write some articles or something? It's going to be an arduous process, but it won't happen from working in rando PI.

the fact that yo lack the sense to know when to stop repeating the same gag is far more telling about your limitations than all the usual, formal measures.
