not JAG question, but is it still true that any officer willing to stick it out in the Army is pretty much going to get promoted all the way to Colonel?

With respect to courts-martial, he or she decides whether a case should be disposed of by court-martial, and after the court-martial he or she approves the findings and sentence (can only reduce, can't increase).

what are the most important academic qualities for JAG? I don't think the fitness part would be an issue but nothing on my resume screams military.

They are just as focused on getting good officers as they are good lawyers. So they value leadership roles, team sports, interest in public service. You need to be able to articulate why you want to be in the military, but you don't need to be prior enlisted or ROTC.

Many white males are prior service. If OP is a white male and looking for active duty, he's in trouble.

They don't care much at all about academic pedigree. The JAG Corp takes people from Cooley and New England Law School, and it shows. Judge advocates run the gamut in quality, though.

If you are an enlisted Soldier, you will be pretty miserable if you have a problem with authority. It's very different for officers, and even more so for JAs.

I have a lot of freedom. The boogeyman threat of being moved to North Dakota or deployed for years or on end doesn't bother.

PT can range from five days per week to never, depending on where you are assigned. You will still need to pass the APFT twice a year though. As far as training, you can go to the range and shoot a few times per year. Unless you are about to deploy, you don't get much military training.

There is one board. There will not be a Spring 2013 board. ITE has caught up with the JAG Corps. But they are still hiring people, so you may as well try.

I still believe that students from good law schools have a stronger than average chance if they can articulate a sincere desire to serve and show potential to adapt well to military life.

Damn, that sucks. Was hoping to have more than one shot. It's gonna be my second time applying. I interned last year but didn't get in on the last board; anecdotally, all the people I know who did get in (and I know a few) were either prior service or ROTC. I do have a job lined up already but JAG is still my #1 choice. Briefly flirted with the idea of doing Reserve, but after a good conversation with one of my prior FSOs, I realize that it has to be Active Duty or bust.

If I get in on this board, what's the turn-around time on getting all my stuff in gear for Charlottesvile?

If you are already licensed, maybe July or October 2013. I would hammer it home to JARO that you are already licensed if you get accepted. Otherwise, they'll just assume you're taking the July 2013 bar and you'll be looking at February or July 2014.

Most JAGs are not prior service or ROTC.

I won't be licensed by the time the application is due since my state doesn't report results until mid-November. Should I amend somehow? My JARO contacts are no longer at JARO so I don't even know who to ask there. :(

Yeah, most JAGs I've met were not prior service or ROTC, but it seems that the board prioritized ROTC candidates over non-ROTC candidates. No hard feelings there, since if the ROTC kids weren't accepted into the JAG Corps, they would have to become line officers despite the 3 years that they spent in law school.

If you get accepted, I would call JARO and make it clear that you are already admitted so you are ready to start JAOBC as soon as a spot is available.

I would recommend trying to interview with someone who went to your school or a school in the same general grouping. Someone from a lower ranked school isn't likely to be impressed by a T25 and may actually have a subconscious bias against you.

Other than that, my advice to you is the same as to anyone else: If you have decent grades, you're probably okay academically. Now work on showing why you're going to be a good officer and why you want to be in the military. That's equally if not more important.

It depends how much gas is in the chamber, and how long they make you stay inside once you take your mask off. When I went through, it was a joke. I'd say a 2. But I've heard from other people that it can be hell.
