mid/senior associate litigators: what is your exit strategy

My goal was always to go into government, but that looks fairly unlikely now given all the budget problems. In house would be the other route, but that makes me nervous--what if your company has a downturn, and you get laid off? Starting to feel like law school was the wrong choice, even though I went to a great law school, graduated at the top of my class, and worked at two "top" firms. For me the problem is the up or out system. I doubt that I'll make partner at my current firm, and I'm not sure that I'd make it at another firm, either. I just don't see how a junior litigator could bring in business (required to make partner usually) unless you have Bill Clinton-level charisma (which I don't). I wouldve been the youngest person there by about ten years. I'm getting the impression that the in-house route is every bit as backed up/unattainable as government.
