It's like an SAT on steroids because in Germany, you start studying things like medicine or law in the first year of university- and you need a very good Abischnitt to study those:

The narrator says she only got a "2" in the German portion of her Abitur (which isn't horrible but not good), but that her story still had a happy end. He then explains that she improved her score on her "Nachprufung" which means "after exam" or "after evaluation." Not really sure what that involves, but it seems they take into account her having gotten good grades (a 13 out of 15) in German previously.
Helene then explains that she loves literature and German is her favorite subject so she's very happy that her 13 in German helped bring her Abitur score up to a more acceptable level. |

All the kids in this video are Gymnasium students- the best and brightest.
The three-tier school system is very old and wasn't invented for the refugee situation, but it makes it a lot easier for Germans to live with the refugees, unless you happen to have a dumbass kid in the Hauptschule. |

My online German teacher is smart and she went to a Realschule - she said she could have gone to a Gymnasium but her friends were going to the Realschule and she didn't want to deal with the stress of Gymnasium so she took the easy route.
You can still pursue higher education after a Realschule, but usually at a "Fachhochschule" instead of a university. The difference between a German university and a Fachhochschule is kind of like the difference between an Ivy League college or Duke, etc and somewhere like Oklahoma State. |
