Are you single? why do you need to live in MFH?
EDIT: saw below.
How old are the kids? How much money does your wife make compared to you in the new job? Can she get another job easily? Unless you guys are very wealthy, seems like a move west is your best option.

Do you have a car? That would be rough on public transit.
If you have a car and there is a good reason to take the job, go for it. Plenty of people do that commute with traffic. You'd be going against traffic. But even so, the commute would be rough, so I wouldn't do it for a 15% pre-tax bump in pay or something like that.
Will they give you WFH days? You could negotiate that as part of an offer.

no car, but would one if I got the job (public transit would be a non-starter starter given how convoluted it would be)
I believe the office requirement is 2 (moving to 3) days a week, so not terrible.
but yes, it would probably only be a 10-15% bump in total comp (partially offset by fewer PTO days), but better medium- to long-term career opportunities

It sounds like you have ~$1M pre-tax HHI, right?
Don't take this new job. It's not worth it, unless there is something else that we're missing, like your current job is terrible, the hours are going to be much better, the future prospects are much, much better etc. A 10-15% raise at your astronomical NY and federal marginal tax rates, and factoring in the cost of a car and parking in NY, might net out close to zero. And you'll lose PTO days in the process, when you have young kids you should be enjoying those with?
If you are going to go for it anyway, get them to agree as part of your offer package that your role is 2-3 days a week WFH even if the more generally applicable policy changes. Many people are facing RTO. This would at least put up a road black to them doing that to you.
