Buy latest phone at K price, flip for $300-500 profit, cop 90% as good phone for $150.

EDIT: EXAMPLE: iphone 5 came out, buy for 200 and sell for 800 (even 1000 if in the first few weeks). Then buy Galaxy Nexus (arguably an even better phone, 90% as good as S3) for 150-200.

consumerism mostly

but also we use our phones more than anything else. they're at the level of becoming extensions of ourselves so you want a phone that would be the best extension of yourself or something

i think the last sentence is how people really do think, but it's irrational and it is consumerism.

of course if everybody starts thinking like me then the latest phone won't be so fucking profitable to sell so eh.

Admittedly, it works better if you are flipping the iphone and using a droid phone. Iphones hold their value really well. But then again they cost a shit ton when new if you look at opportunity cost (selling new iphone 5 for 1000+ and taking 800 profit).

How is it 100 a year? If you buy a new phone every 22 months, it's 200-300+ per year. Still not a big deal, but neither is having a phone that's just slightly better.

Let's say you have an iPhone 4 right now and your 2yr contract is up when the new iPhone comes out later this year. You can upgrade to the new iPhone for $200 with a 2yr contract and then sell it on eBay for $600-$700 because the person buying it is buying it without the 2yr commitment. Meanwhile you continue using your iPhone 4 for a couple more years while pocketing the profit from your eBay iPhone.

Assuming someone buys it on eBay for that amount.

You've got to count on People not being able to get the phone at the store or online.

If the store has it, you can always by the iPhone w/o a contract for the FULL ASS-RAPING price and w/o a contract.

I have looked into what the price of new iPhones run for on eBay within a couple months of release and usually they are in the same ballpark as full retail at a store (sans tax).

Here's what the latest iPhone 5 runs for after over half a year on the market:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR9.TRC1&_nkw=iphone+5+16&_sacat=0&_from=R40

There's no assuming, it's guaranteed. The retail prices for the iphone 5 are 650, 750, 850. You can at least get that easily for a long time after release. You can even do craigslist for less hassle.

Within a few weeks of release you can make even more, people will pay 1000+.

But the gamble is can Joe SixPack walk down the street and get the phone brand new from the store or website?

If they have it in stock, why buy it on eBay or Craigslist?

As I said, even at the store they are paying 650, 750, 850 plus tax plus probably activation fee. You're perfectly fine selling at those prices in any case. You don't need to sell for any higher than that.

But for whatever reason, thousands upon thousands are sold on ebay far above those prices every time there is a new phone released. I don't know if it's phone shortages or people just being stupid/lazy or what.

that's the other thing, apple has done a much better job keeping their products in stock. the iphone5 you could just walk into the apple store the day after release and they had it available.

except that your phone is tied to that contract so you'll also being paying the fees with no phone, or getting a new phone and paying for the monthly price of that.

unless whatever provider you use works it differently, i tried doing this with sprint it doesn't work.

Wtf are you saying? You can get a new contract then ditch the phone and put on whatever phone you feel like. You can even get a smartphone at contract price then ditch it right away and downgrade your plan to a flip phone without even paying for a data plan.

No, I always buy a new phone whenever I want it regardless of contract date. I just get them on ebay and I always weigh the cost of any phone as its ebay price, since that is the opportunity cost. For example with androids right now the galaxy nexus can be had for less than $150 even though it's 90% as good as the S3 which goes for 400+.
