Thinking of moving there. Is Austin credited?

In MFH now. But getting offers down there paying the same I make here, yet the COL is way less, lower taxes (no local nor state tax) and I hear the city is a credited, liberal city. Like a blue oasis in TX.

Thoughts?

traffic is bad to the point where it affects day-to-day quality of life. for a city of austin's modest size, it's spectacularly awful.

it's overrated given how much ppl talk about the city as hip, young, fast-growing, etc.

it's actually got a small town feel, is sorta run-down within most of the city limits, and is hot as balls most of the year

relative to every other city in TX, it's expensive. When you consider that you need a car, the COL advantage versus MFH isn't that drastic

It's Portland Texas. It's a really great city. The highway separates all the blacks from polite society so it's really easy to stay in the safe, clean part.

The only problem is a relative lack of jobs compared to the number of people who want to live there. Unless you're in compsci.

Austin does have very good public schools, at least in the rich/white areas. Town Lake is a 180 park. I guess if you stay on the white people's side of the highway, you're OK.

It's a credited place to be a student. It's also a credited place if you know people there.

People who aren't familiar with Austin think it's a mecca where low COL, cheerful CGWBTs for every guy, cool live music, great BBQ/mexican, a pretty little lake that looks like a river, and enough social conservatives to keep shit in line but not be annoying.

The truth is that Austin is rather run down and dumpy-suburban outside of the central area. It's not very pretty in many areas. The nice-looking areas are very expensive. Having a car (and dealing with traffic) make Austin not that much cheaper than MFH. And it's very, very difficult to get a job there unless you are in computer science or something similarly techy, or have a strong tie to Texas.

The girls (other than the co-eds, who you won't be dating unless you are still in your mid 20s or younger) are hipstery and very Brooklyn/Williamsburg. Crunchy, hippie-chic, fake ironic mustaches.

Nighlife is a one-trick pony. It's a combination of Williamsburg and 2nd Avenue (in NYC terms).

what about just settling down/family life?

why do people call it so outdoorsy--it has a lake and some hills? what else?

It has great public schools.

People spend a lot of time outside on that lake and in hill country. There are naked hippies that bathe in the ponds. I saw it as a pretty suburb, but it doesn't have the outdoorsy splendor of, say, the Pacific Northwest.

I can say that rads residencies are disproportionately less competitive in Texas just because people don't want to live among savages
