Either "rule" is being used in a "strong" sense (an absolutely true statement, like "Something cannot be A and not A at the same time and in the same respect") in which case an "exception" would, as you say, be a refutation, OR "rule" is being used in a weak sense, meaning a general tendency (e.g. "As a rule, that restaurant is busy on Tuesdays") in which case any exceptions would not "prove" the rule since it was only describing a tendency to begin with. |
