I am personally retarded with money. No clue how finance works. So what the hell is going on? People actually pay 105 thousand dollars for "1" of these fake internet monies with absolutely no backing, isn't really used anywhere as currency? But we're allowed supposed to own it because it's "going to the moon"?
I am not criticizing it. Just seeking to understand the why. It's all based on collective belief right that it's going to go up forever because more and more people believe it's valuable?

To be fair,
To answer a question with a question: Why is "physical gold" so valuable in 2025?
Can you explain the utility and utility-driven basis of the current value of owning a bar of physical gold that you can hold in your hand, WITHOUT falling back on "well it's always been valuable" (which obviously isn't a substantive answer that actually attempts to address the utility of gold and identify the utility-driven basis of its current value to humans and modern society in 2025)?
HINT: Only about ~10-15% of physical gold is used for any sort of technological or industrial purposes, so saying "well physical gold is valuable because it helps to make our modern world run" is demonstrably NOT the CR.

To be fair,
TWIST: Owning gold is, without question, the single best universal *historical* investment that has ever existed throughout civilizational history. Gold has never fallen out of favor, anywhere, for any period of time. Gold has literally been rising in value for thousands of years. Pretty much every single area of collectibles has risen and fallen based on the tastes of time and place... stonks have famously risen and fallen and 99% of them have ultimately gone to zero... even important global [paper] currencies issued by once-mighty empires have experienced hyperinflation and crashes that ruined everyone who held them... yet gold has weathered it all, and continued to rise over time. No one has ever lost their fortune holding it in gold, unless it was stolen or literally misplaced.
As someone who is LONG on both gold and BTC and holds both assets (albeit not for precisely the same reasons), I encourage you to give some serious thought to why that is and what it could potentially portend for BTC. HINT: In both cases, it has very little to do with any sort of inherent or intrinsic value of either commody, and a whole lot to do with universal truths about human psychology and behavior.

To be fair,
"Silver is up 20%!"
Now do BTC
Now do TSLA
Fuck, now just do "any ETF with broad exposure to the US stonk market"
Silver is one of the worst performing major asset classes of the last decade, and I can't help but notice that you didn't actually answer my question about how Reddit's important project is going. You used to gleefully give us weekly updates on that as you counted down the inevitable moon mission. Haven't seen one of those in a year or two, though. What happened, bud?

cr.
people need to untether their mind from believing in market price determination leading to the "true value" of something. it's all just supply and demand. plenty of things that have no intrinsic value, like art sitting in a warehouse, command high prices.
bitcoin has been a great investment over the past 15 years. bitcoin is pretty much finite (actually declining as people lose access to wallets). if the supply stays the same or goes down, and demand continues to grow, the price goes up.
that's all it is. it doesn't matter that bitcoin has no purpose or utility. if people keep buying something that has a finite supply, the price goes up.

what do you mean "why"? because of math. you're still tethered to the belief that something like this "can't happen" when the past 15 years has proven it can.
it's no different than action comics #1 continuing to increase in value. the underlying thing doesn't matter. demand increases = price goes up. there is no point at which people collectively realize "oh wow haha this is a bubble." bitcoin has proven that.
there is no outside force, no invisible hand, and the market is not rational. if demand for bitcoin continues to grow, so will the price. that's the entire analysis.

*if* demand for bitcoin continues to grow...
you are so fucking stupid it's unreal.
my point is that it's a human behavior thing, not about asset analysis. *if* demand for bitcoin falls so will the price. i'm not predicting which will happen.

I am not disagreeing with you at all. I am still asking why do people want it. There must be a reason that more people desire it, even if irrational.
Action Comics 1 is a beloved relic that launched a massive cultural phenomenon and one of the most historically significant characters in modern history. Owning an original is gives people the feeling that they physically have something that represents that. They like the tactile feeling of the old paper, the ink, the smell. And the ability to say I have this thing that everybody wants, the feeling any collector has with owning something rare and valuable.
Rational or not I can understand the desire and range of emotions comic book collectors have for the grail. But what makes bitcoin so precious? What about it gives people so many goodfeels?

because it's been an incredible investment and people think it'll go higher.
and before you say "yeah but that can't happen in perpetuity" i invite you to look at a bitcoin price graph.
rationally, of course, it can't go up forever. but it has so far. that's the entire analysis. and as much you might not like it that it defies how you think human behavior and markets should work, exeunt has a garage full of lambos and you don't.
market theory reflects reality, does not proscribe it. you can stare at a btc chart all day and say "this shouldn't happen", but it did.

Bitcoin has value because it combines scarcity, utility, and trust. Its fixed supply of 21 million coins ensures scarcity, making it resistant to inflation. As a decentralized digital currency, it enables secure, borderless, and censorship-resistant transactions without intermediaries. Bitcoin's value is further reinforced by its growing adoption, the energy and infrastructure invested in mining, and the trust placed in its transparent, immutable blockchain technology, which operates independently of any government or central authority. This unique combination positions Bitcoin as both a store of value and a medium of exchange.

its price is now tied directly to to the creative destruction of the economy by AI.
As wagies get absolutely blown out over the coming years due to AI and then robotics - bitcoin becomes a golden parachute/hail mary to survive/out-run inflation/a non-human centered economy.
with each new ai model release expect the price to rise once people grok they're no longer needed.
