From the first day of orientation to graduation day, Tommy was my best friend in college. My only friend. We lost touch after school (he never got into social media) and for 10 years I had no idea what had happened to him. And that hurt. He was someone very special to me. In fact, I had a huge crush on him that I didn’t realize until years after the fact. I could go on and on about how wonderful of a person he was, how kind and intelligent, and just how much he helped The Other Guy get through a very dark and miserable time in my life.
Last summer, I did my yearly Facebook search for him, and right as I was beginning to think that Tommy was just a fevered dream I had come up with as a coping mechanism…there he was. His fiancé made him a profile. I reached out, said Hey, good to see you…um, my name isn’t [REDACTED] anymore, I hope that’s ok…
And he has been phenomenal about it. Truly surprising. He showed a natural understanding, intuitiveness, respectful curiosity and kindness that I honestly was not expecting or prepared for. After a year of brief touch-ins, we planned a weekend where I would come down from New York and visit him in rural Virginia.
When we finally met, finally, after 11 long years, he embraced me and held me tight. Nearly squeezed all the tears out of me right there. We picked up right where we left off.
Over the course of the weekend he said so many wonderful things that just validated me to my core. He said he had no clue what to expect, but he was surprised at how little of The Other Guy he saw when he looked at me. He saw (in his words) a stunningly beautiful woman. He saw Me for Me…and…that’s everything. Everything. We chatted a lot. He got choked up a lot; I cried way more. I learned that The Other Guy was just as important to him surviving college as he was to me. I answered every question he asked. I told him things I never told a single person before.
I got to meet his family – his girlfriend/fiancé of 10 years, his 2 horses, 3 doggos, and 8 kitties, and I befriended all of them! I got to lounge about on their back porch for hours, I mowed their pasture (using a zero-point turn mower was fun) and I cooked them latkas. By the last night we were all hanging out on their giant couch watching Netflix and cuddling with the animals.
I left before the sun came up on the last day. We hugged and embraced for a while. “I’m not waiting 11 years to see you again,” I whispered. “Me neither,” he whispered back.
I can’t wait for next Summer.
