I went to therapy and the woman tried to convince me I was gay. It was honestly super weird and I never went back

i've had two rounds of it, both with my arm twisted. once was in college, when a girlfriend (chinese national) kept trying to kill herself in front of me and the school decided both of us needed therapy to be allowed to continue on. i found someone with a philosophy phd as well as whatever psych degree, but she didn't have much to offer besides validating whatever i was thinking anyway but with kind tones.

the other was more recently, after my sickness etc. the enforcement mechanism here was getting someone to sign off on my ability to drive despite alcoholism. she didn't help much either, but she did 'determine' that my alcoholism was more of an extended suicide from major depression than substance abuse disorder per se. prestigious?

couple of dings due to seeking out women. the first one sounds bad, the second one better. the idea of "passive" suicide / self-destruction is moderately prestigious. have you considered returning or do you think it is mostly a sham?

i didn't seek out a woman in the first case and the second was a random draw by a hospital social worker.

i don't know if it's a sham per se, but i'm suspicious of the combination of the profit incentives, both to keep you in therapy generally and to keep you coming back to that person specifically. my mom went to therapy at the same time and called periodically to yell at me when i was recovering because her therapy evidently told her i don't love her enough. it makes total sense that a therapist would play into her obvious desires, and i assume most would have a similar incentive with me.

thats a good point about family members being in separate therapy. since the goal of therapy is to develop individualism a common mechanism is to indulge and reinforce adversarial tendencies.

it seems common to hope that indulgence leads a person to recognize their own faults since direct confrontation would tend to push people away, but its sort of a catch 22. my mom is in therapy too and she uses it as a reason to be blatantly selfish. my therapist does the same to me but i don't use it as ammo against my parents, that's just insane.
