Neruda describes a Tamil woman from a very low-status caste who worked collecting human waste from his latrine in Colombo. He says he became obsessed with her despite her ignoring his attempts to attract her attention. Eventually, he says:
“I got a strong grip on her wrist and stared into her eyes.”
He says he took her to his bedroom and that she was naked there. He then describes the encounter as being like “the coming together of a man and a statue”, and says she remained “completely unresponsive” throughout. He concludes: “She was right to despise me. The experience was never repeated.” |

The house where Pablo Neruda lived in Colombo was at:
**No. 56, 42nd Lane, Wellawatte, Colombo 6, Sri Lanka.** ([The Sunday Times][1])
It was a **seaside bungalow**, very close to the beach. He lived there during his posting as Chilean consul in Ceylon, around **1929–1930**. ([Literary Hub][2])
However, **the original bungalow was demolished**. A 2010 account says students from the Overseas School of Colombo located the former address, but the house itself was already gone. ([The Sunday Times][1])
So if you're looking at it on a map today, search for:
**42nd Lane, Wellawatte, Colombo 6**
The historical location is particularly interesting because the neighborhood has changed enormously since Neruda's time; what was then a sparsely developed seaside area is now dense Colombo. ([laprovinciadicomo.it][3])
