1998 period was the worst IMO

it was better like 90-94 when BBSs were still around and local communities actually formed around them.

i went to regular BBS meetups as a young teen

Most people accessed the internet through AOL, Compuserve, or Prodigy via dial up modem. At the time a lot of people thought of the internet as chat rooms provided by the isp. Most isps also provided headline news and sports. Getting box scores right after a sporting event was a pretty big deal at the time for anybody in playing fantasy football/Baseball/Basketball. Prior to that you had no idea how your fantasy guys did until you read it in the paper the next morning.

There were new isps popping up every month and they usually gave free trials. So it was pretty easy to find free internet access.

The www was still in its infancy. I remember when AOL teamed up with netscape (which was the biggest browser at the time) around 1995 or 96 to provide access to the www. That was a big deal since it gave millions of people their first taste of the www.

Most websites were horrid looking and caused eye bleeding. They were usually hosted on geocities. There was internet porn, but it was mostly pictures since broadband was very limited at that time.

If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer them.

when did javascript and CSS start to pop up on websites? when and why did macromedia flash begin to get popular?

Not until broadband began to expand after 2000. Pages with that would have taken forever to load on dialup. Prior to that the only animation on websites were in gif files.

Macromedia and flash probably got popular because they're pretty easy to learn.

how much video did you try to watch online back in the day? did you download realplayer/quicktime clips and that sort of thing?

I didn't get broadband in my area until 2001. Prior to that downloading video was too slow. The phone lines in my area were also old, so there were frequent timeouts, which made dl videos a nightmare.

But realplayer and quicktime were the most common video formats.

I used to flame those chatrooms all the time. I once flamed them by telling them that I was a 12 year old boy and asking if a dirty old man wanted to make me happy. You won't believe how many IM's I got.

Greetings,

lol it was like the South Park episode about NAMBLA where Cartman goes online and types that he's a little boy and gets a bunch of IMs from hungdaddy and the like: "hi i'm 12 inches" and responds "sorry i don't like midgets"

yeah, i'd sleep over at a buddy's house (no homo) and we'd flame the gay chatrooms with FAGGOT FAGIT FAGORT and such

i'm sure 99% of the people there were straight JHS kids

around 1999-2002 it was awesome because there was a lag between when normal people got broad band and poors got it. it the internet was almost entirely are country and nigger free.

I think what you mean is that the wealthy didn't necessarily get broadband before the poors and middle class. This was pretty much true since most isps rolled out broadband starting in areas closest to their data centers and spread outward. If a poor area happened to be close to the isp's data center, it probably had broadband by 2000. Whereas, there were wealthy areas that still didn't have broadband in 2002.
