I know it's internet broscience but I did a weak form of this yesterday (minimizing internet, no TV/vidya, drinking only water, very little food, walking outside without listening to music) and I noticed a pronounced change in my mood. Was much more productive with household chores in the evening, much less anxious in general, and felt more connected to my own brain.

Thinking of ramping it up on a weekend day when I can really go whole hog.

how was the fast itself? were you jonesin' for your phone? and are you supposed to just avoid anything that brings you joy? or just screens?

There were times I was, and definitely jonesing for food (didn't eat until 6pm and even that was small). But the cravings went away, and it became easier and easier to resist temptation as the day wore on.

i normally (been slacking lately) don't look at screens an hour after waking and an hour before sleeping. Also, if i'm somewhere i always leave me phone in the car. it demonstrably helps my mood.

gq. to me, yes. i think there is something to holding a book and reading in the traditional way that may differ substantively from kindle.

ultimately, it's all broscience and i could be completely full of shit.

Yeah Everytime I'm institutionalized I get like > 1-2 weeks no phone no caffeinated coffee and I don't watch the shared TV. It works, but once you come back you reset into the regular world of dopa in about a day.

Tldr it's very temporary and pretty much not worth it. Do what you like, you won't TRANSFORM for long.

as stated in OP I'm aware it's broscience and I don't know what the actual mechanism is. But there's no denying taking these actions (especially the internet one) has a profound effect on one's mental state.

also the first several google results for "dopamine fast" are jews saying it's bad, which gives me pretty high confidence that it works

Doing anything that you expect to have a profound effect on your mental state will have such an effect the first few times you do it.

Do you know what causes that change in your mental state when you do something that you expect to have a profound, positive effect? I'll give you a hint--it starts with a "d".

yeah I'm calling bullshit on that one. if I'm intentionally abstaining from things that cause a dopamine rush (sugar, porn, masturbation, xo) I don't think that in and of itself is triggering dopamine release.

just so I have this straight, you're arguing that abstaining from, e.g., smartphones is beneficial because I believe it will be beneficial? and that our smartphones are not having a profound negative impact on our everyday states of mind?

Abstaining from smartphones might be beneficial. That immediate good feeling you got from abstaining for a few hours was thanks to dopamine.

it felt categorically different from the "dopamine hits" I get when engaging in degenerate behavior, so I would imagine other neurotransmitters are at play here (maybe in concert with dopamine)

tbf, "dopamine" in the casual sense doesn't mean dopamine in the medical sense. OP is talking about the general being fried/anxiety we get from screens and, specifically, the filth that comes out of them.
