I think there is a general movement away from the specialty mainly due to the unpredictable and sometimes hectic hours as well as the liability risks of the field, but I think for some male medical students, having also to deal with gender issues and gender politics is just too much. They'd rather go into a different field.

Ob/Gyn as a specialty encompassed a lot of what I enjoyed most about medicine. On the one hand, you follow patients on a longitudinal basis throughout most of their life, there is a lot of opportunity for patient education in the outpatient setting and to make a real difference in womens' lives, you do a little medicine and you can do a fair amount of surgery, and there is nothing else in medicine like obstetrics where you assist in guiding a new life into the world. In general, it's a happy field though the hours and stress can be rough.

There have been times I wish I could know what it feels like from a physical and emotional standpoint to be a woman as it would help me understand some patients better, but sometimes I think not knowing makes me more sensitive to patients' discomfort. For instance, I've had some patients tell me (and unfortunately, I have seen this of some female colleagues) that sometimes a female ob/gyn can be rougher with the exam or less sympathetic about physical complaints presumably because the female doctor has gone through childbirth or a pap smear and feels like it's "no big deal." I have no idea what it feels like to have a pap smear done, but I know it can cause a fair amount of discomfort for some women, so I'm sensitive to causing patients discomfort during a speculum exam.
