This ritual is ultimately transactional, not morality-based, and a sufficiently valuable sacrifice is the main element.
This isn't really the heart of the Christian mystery religion though.
What Jesus actually did, in the mystery religion context (think Orphic, Eleusinian, etc.), was die in a way that got him resurrected by God. Before that resurrection, however, he inducted his followers into a mystical communion with him, meaning that they shared in both his death and resurrection. In this view, you are saved by the magic of the communion sacrament, which makes you one with Jesus, who was actually saved by merit. Presumably, he would not have chosen to go through with this if not for our sake, and therefore he died for [the sake of] our sins.
The church of the middle ages was something else again. There, sin had tremendous importance, but could be expelled by sacraments and good works. This led to a lot of abuse, and eventually Luther. |

I think that the earliest extant statements that Jesus died for our sins are from Paul, but he claimed to have heard it from others: "For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures . . . ." |

I can only really repeat what I've heard from Bart Ehrman, which is that Jesus was an apocalypticist who believed in the imminent arrival of a new age, which would be ushered in by the Son of Man—who was not Jesus himself. Originally, Jesus' followers thought that he had been elevated to divinity upon his death (kind of like Hercules), then they came to think that he had become divine at his baptism, then they came to think that he was born divine, then they came to think that he had been a pre-existent divine being, then they came to think that he was an aspect of God himself. |
