By "the area," they mean within a 500-mile radius.

wat about calling a judge to say you're (in-town) interviewing another judge on the same court?

Also, does calling chambers actually HURT your chances? Will the answering secretary somehow screen out your app?

A lot of district judges don't have secretaries. Instead they have 2 term clerks and 1 career clerk. So the person you're talking to will, more than likely, have some hand in the hiring process.

Solution: just don't say your name! If they ask, yell like a girl and hang up.

maybe, maybe not; that's the thinking. By calling, they hope to move from a "maybe" to a definite interview. As my above post suggests, I did it once cuz I was interviewing a judge on the same court (same building) on a given day. Hoped to get more bang for the buck on my trip.

it's been a gradual thing. other than the d.c. circuit, which created the plan, most of the prestigious judges hire early so they can get the best applicants. look at the ninth circuit or SDNY - not many spots are still open for 2011-12. They're already interviewing for 2012-13 and 2013-14

yup yup

the careers at my court are out at 430 everyday, probably make low 100s for essentially a 35 hour workweek. After a while, a lot of it becomes copy and paste motion/order bullshit. You'll occasionally write a SJ opinion or what have you, but even a lot of that incorporates canned language youve already written in the past.

99 percent of these calls are from profs who don't know my judge. their calls don't mean anything. if the judge knows the professor, that's a different story. we received five calls from a prof who said, "I rarely make calls on behalf of students, but ____ is exceptional." he must have been speed dialing for three days.

Most people type the addresses onto the envelopes. The handwritten ones stand out, and not in a good/professional way.

oops. i figured you'd just take the papers out of the envelope and toss them in a stack without really connecting the two.

we keep the materials in the envelopes, just to organize them. you would be shocked at the number of paper applications we get - in addition to OSCAR. if it's a Harvard student with all H's and LR, we're not going to ding for that. but for all the candidates on the margins, we'll find any excuse to discard the app.

If you have a firm job to fall back on, you're fine, and lucky in many ways.
