tbf, when I rolled with this dude in BJJ who was a fellow BLUE BELT at the time and claimed a 475 bench (was believable based on his massive stubby arms) I felt like he was easy to control. I manhandled him. And it wasn't just because I used leverage better or whatever, I felt stronger than him. Overall. It was funny a few times though when I got side control on him he literally just benched me off. So hard I went flying a couple times. So I guess bench press is not without its utility in BJJ, but its limited.
He was a blue belt though. Black belt and he would've kicked my ass whether his bench press was 475 or 175.
That's BJJ though....I imagine bench press is good for something else in a real fight (like...pushing guys off of you? controlling their arms in grappling? idk). And all of rape101's lifts were comparably strong. |

well....tbf my bench was in the 325-350 range at the time (my strongest). so its not like I was weak. and my core, legs and back were even stronger. but yeah I could tell this guy could probably put up at least 100, if not 150 pounds more than me on bench. substantial. and I felt his upper body strength. but I still neutralized him and felt stronger overall. so not sure how applicable the bench is.
one instance where I used my upper body strength against a way smaller more experienced guy is when he had me in his guard and kept trying to arm bar but I was like "lol sorry lil breh" and kept him held down by the belt. at the time, I didn't really know any good moves (white belt) so I basically just held him there until the instructor told us to stop.
but yeah I got my ass kicked by black belts who were not as strong as me. belee dat. and it wasn't close. brown and purple belts too. so no technique uber alles but it is pretty damn important.
of course the worst ass kicking I took was by this 6'5 265 pound (ripped) prison guard/biker guy. he was a brown belt so yeah he had technique on me but ....he just felt stronger than me. I couldn't do much against him. there were other brown belt guys who I could at least overpower in certain situations (before they slipped out and twisted my arm back at some ungodly angle) but not this dude. so yeah believe me raw power is important too. this guy was just strong overall though...not just upper body press strong. |

yeah. I still imagine that if you do low rep compound lifts covering the entire body that you have pretty good functional strength.

lol yeah that was funny. but no grip strength is huge and manual labor bros with popeye forearms are at a distinct advantage there. next to core/leg strength, grip strength is the most important strength factor in BJJ. so I imagine blue collar proles would be naturally good at grappling.
